Harry I did a search on TuffPak and read where you offered a deal on them. Could you make another deal like that to AR members again?

If someone buys a TuffPak, I strongly suggest that they get the "saddlebags", too.

They fit right on the Pak and make it a simple task to wheel everything you have with one hand so you have no problem with your "carry-on". If the airlines require, you just unbuckle. If it can't fit in the combination, you don't need it! Roll Eyes

Don't forget to get the interior "sock". I had to fly a charter in a Cessna 172 and it made it a much easier fit when I could pull out the sock and just leave the Pak at the charter hanger. Inspection for TSA or whomever is easier, too.

My TuffPak has now made about 10 plane trips with not a worry!

I do worry about Mims, though. I watched pretty carefully this year in Dallas. He never sold the same TuffPak more than once.

I don't know if Harry will ever offer another TuffPak deal after the last round of debate over it. Can't blame him if he doesn't.

UEG: Sadly there will always be the nay sayers in any crowd. If Harry is a good businessman he's heard them before. It is the amount of sales he gets from such an offer that over shadows such comments and makes the final deal worthwhile.

Harry acted quite rudely and aggressively when it was suggested that the TuffPak be fitted with a fixture to accept a padlock. I prefer to deal with a retailer who does not make the customer out to be a villain for suggesting that the product may not have achieved the pinnacle of perfection yet.

500Grains, that, unfortunately, is becoming the norm here lately. God help anyone who breaks away from the flock, and voices a dissenting opinion. You get desended upon like the proverbial flock of locusts.

Have question concerning tuffpack's, if your gun is in a soft case inside your tuffpack, can you also carry your ammo if in a lock ammo case inside the tuffpack also? Or if you by the tuff saddle bag and it is connected to the tuffpack can you carry your ammo in it or does it have to be seperate?
Thanks

If Harry can't come up this time as he has graciously done in the past, Midsouth shooters supply has a good price on them.

I also suggested the external locking with a padlock. Last year (it was my fault) I lost a set of the keys for my TP and I always carry two sets of keys so I had no problem. When I got home I contacted Harry and he in turned got me to TP and I had to have 2 sets of keys made for my TP at a cost of $35. Buying a new master lock would have been much cheaper. I guess their thought is if you can afford our product $35 for a new set is nothing - of course providing a replacement set free on for a nominal fee would be good pr for them. Roll Eyes

Seems like a quick answer to the external padlock would be to get one of the cable locks similar to what gun manufacturers are supplying (giving away) for firearms. You could easily run the cable around the two halves securely. Even a bicycle lock would work, wouldn't it?

So far, I think we've had one person on these boards with an issue of the lock on the Tuff-Pak and that was because he lost both keys, right?

I've picked up a couple of steel pad lock latches and two TSA approved (read TSA can unlock) padlocks. I just haven't bothered to get out the drill and install them. It seems to me a simple retrofit. I'll let you guys know once I've tried it. If it works well, I'll not use the TuffPak locking system.

I could be wrong, but I thought that the TSA locks were for luggage, not gun cases. Maybe Terry Carr will chime in as I think he has indicated his view on that before. I have seen the suggestion that you include an extra padlock so that TSA can re-lock the case if they cut your lock off.

Caveat -- I am no TSA Reg guru.

Thanks for raising the issue. I would hope to have that clarified before I start drilling holes in a brand new case.

Hey guys, remember Mims sells Tuffpaks, he doesn't design or build them. He can't change how they lock, other than to pass comments on to the manufacturer. Bob

Yes, but he does not need to respond to suggestions with venomous hostility.

14 CFR 108.203(e)

(iii) The container in which it(the firearm) is carried is locked, and only the person checking the baggage retains the key or combination; and

TSA Regulations:

It is preferred that the passenger provide the key or combination to the screener if it is necessary to open the container, and then remain present during screening to take back possession of the key after the container is cleared. If you are not present and the screener must open the container, the TSA and/or airline will make a reasonable attempt to contact the passenger. If this is unsuccessful, the container will not be placed on the plane since unlocked gun cases (or cases with broken locks) are not permitted on aircraft due to Federal regulations.

[Note: the TSA language has changed. It used to have only the first sentence. Now they have added the language about contacting you to open it and the language about not putting the case on the plane if it is unlocked (broken locks).]

Terry

Terry,

Would it be a good idea to put a lock or two in the gun case (where it can be seen easy) with a note saying, "please put these new locks on my case when you are done"

Just to avoid getting to your hunting port and finding out your guns were left behind! (I know that feeling well!)

TSA approved locks, if I understand correctly, can be opened with a sort of TSA key. If I am correct, that mechanical device can be opened by anyone who can obtain or copy a "key" such as that. I think I would prefer a lock for which I am the only person with the key or combination for a gun case.

Yes, I think that is a good idea. Unfortunately, that won't work on a Tuffpak. Every time I have travelled, the TSA guys inspect my Tuffpak and lock it back while I am there. But I am flying out of a small regional airport, so it is never very busy and the TSA guys are a bunch of nice country boys and hunters. As others have suggested, always request a hand inspection of your gun case when you check in.

Regards,

Terry
