What should a person expect from a 10 day hunt in the Selous? From what I have read, a license allows 2 buffalo, 1 zebra, 1 worthog, 1 impala, 1 hartebeast, and 1 wildebeast. How reasonable is it to assume you would have a chance at all of these animals on a 10 day hunt?

It depends on the block and time of year, of course, but if you can walk, you will do just fine. On my last trip there and even though it was early in the year, I "got into" buffalo at least once every morning and afternoon (that we hunted them). We saw the other animals while riding around the block trying to cut fresh buffalo tracks... and we had no problem getting close to the "ancillary" animals (after their initial scare and 1/4 to 1/2 mile initial scurry).

On a 1x1 Selous hunt in 2003, I took a couple of better-than representative buffalo and all the others (less the wildebeest... not because we didn't see any, just not a shooter). I didn't even hunt the last day but just rode around since I'd gotten everything I wanted on license and just wanted to look for elephants.

I'll be back on July 27th.

JudgeG ... just counting time 'til I am again finding balm in Gilead chilled out somewhere in the Selous.

Most hunters can expect to take everything that features on the 7 day licence and that occurs in the region. The hardest one to take is usually the Hartebeest as they're so switched on........but if you're confident on a longer shot then you should get that also.

However the buffer zones are a different matter.

You'll find a list of what species occur on each licence and in the various areas on the Tanzania page of my website. Wink

You should get all of the animals mentioned, The Nyasaland Wildebeest, is nomadic, and from time to time he will not be on some concessions, then again he may be there in vast numbers, at least that has been my experience..
