It is interesting how some of the biggest names in the business are not on the list.

I am sure that some [many?] of the big names have a number of reasons not to be "paid up", OR on a list.

I think this list has the names of Zimbabwe PHs who are hunting in Zimbabwe.

Many of the Zimbabwe PHs are hunting in other countries, so they have to reason to register in Zimbabwe.

Guys,

I asked Gary Duckworth why he, Neil and Barrie were not on the list. He didn't have a clue why their names and the names of a number of long standing SOAZ members where not there. He said he thought the ZPHGA was a good thing and could be very helpful in combatting the illegal hunting etc.

I guess the point is that if your picking a Zim safari operator and you don't find his name on the ZPHGA list that doesn't mean they are not a top notch outfit.

That's the way I see it. Maybe Martin can elaborate for us. For instance, Ryan Cliffe is now operating in Mozambique, last I heard, and therefore wouldn't have a reason to be on the list. That doesn't mean he's not in good graces, just means he's a Zimbo PH operating in another country.

Thanks for the info Martin. Looking forward to our hunt next year.

For all you guys who hunt with the many great PHs who's names don't appear on the list, would you mind asking them why they do not support ZPHGA. Would be interested to know, as its only US$100 a year for membership.

Is that all it takes to be a member? There seems to be many questions about this group that have yet to be answered. People booking hunts are being told to only use folks who are on this list but as pointed out above, there are many great companines and PH's in Zimbabwe that are not part of the group.

We try...a small band of ethical PH's (and dare I mention it , Photogaphic guides) to maintain standards in the face of official conivance to destroy wildlife.

I would like to know what it takes to become a member? What is the mission statement and what are the rules. Who determines membership and enforces the rules?

And No...there are alot of people in SOAZ who's membership application would be rejected

To answer some questions:

* I am surprised why some of the top hunters in Zimbabwe do not want to support our association, it is only $ 100/ year and we stick our necks out for the whole Zimbabwe hunting community. We beg people to become members so we can be stronger in our fight against illegal hunting, with only a few of us it is hard to make a statement. There are some great PH's that are not on the list and I will stick my neck out and say there are some useless Ph's as well.
If you book with a ZPHGA member and you have a gripe, WE WILL ACT, if you book with someone else then don't gripe period.

Urge your long time PH to join so we can unite in our battle against anti hunters and park hunting, let us weed out the bad apples!!

Let me remind you that history indicates that change is made through idea leadership and supported by organized numbers willing to drive a common agenda., not by individuals.

If you apply then the committee sits and approves, if the person has committed an offense , has an outstanding issue with parks, been involved in illegal activities, then the membership may be denied.
What questions are there with the listed names Roscoe, perhaps I can answer them!

Martin,
It is the absence of names on your list that causes me to ask the questions. There are two well know professional hunters with whom I have had great hunts with that are not on this list. I sent an email to one of them shortly after the list was posted and asked why he chose not to be part of the group. He indicated that the lack of transparency has many of the established PH’s leery of being associated with ZPHGA . He also questioned the integrity of some of the people whose names are on the list. There were several other concerns raised that I don’t feel would be proper to post on a public forum.

As I have previously stated (just prior to my quite which you copied above), I believe the intent of your organization is one of valor. I do however believe that if you or your members are going to publicly state that hunters should only book with members of ZPHGA then you should also fully disclose what the organization is about, what it intends to accomplish, and how it intends to influence change. The secondary benefit of having a clearly defined mission statement is that you may also gain the support of Hunters. Comments like “If you book with a ZPHGA member and you have a gripe, WE WILL ACT, if you book with someone else then don't gripe period” are self serving and show a lack of professionalism in my opinion. I believe that to be to be successful ZPHGA will need to show that they offer services that support the hunting industry in Zimbabwe. If done properly, the top names in the industry will want to be associated with your group and you will no longer have to “beg people to be members”.

ROSCOE,

The fact that Martin is on the committee of ZPHGA is enough. The 'big names' you refer to have not sought to be elected or indeed willing to help out and are probably just hot wind.

It is all very well harping on about who and what to do, but the movers in this world actually get out there and put in the commitment.

I presume you are Zimbabwean?

Thanks Andrew.
Rosco, there are many types of people in this world, you get the 'jawbones', always mouthing it off and doing nothing, you get the ' funny bones', always laughing at what other are trying to do , you get the 'neckbones', always looking arounds to see what everyone else does and you get the ' backbones' the people who get out there are do stuff for the hunting community. For $ 100/ year and with or members what do you suppose we do, move which mountain. It is a slow but constant process.
You ask what we do, well email me and I will fill you in the list is too long for me to sit and type here on AR.

In the meantime, get your PH's to join maybe having well know ' legend' PH's on the list will make others follow.

We have a mandate and a clearly defined mission as well as a code of conduct and a constitution, it is available to members.

That is a great analogy Mart! Isn't it true in so many professions!

On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died.

It IS odd that there are so few "recognizable" names on your list. [Only 3 that I recognize, and one of them is fairly well retired. But I really don't know that much about hunting there, having been only twice.]

If ZPHGA will only recommend members to anyone who consults with them, does that mean they DO NOT recommend almost all the big name PH's, many of whom participate here on AR. Does the $100 fee make them recommended?

Martin, I'm not trying to stir up anything here. Really just asking. But in 08, I hunted Bishopstone with a PH in your employ. Not really sure who the outfitter was for that hunt, (possibly you or the PH could have been free lancing, I don't know), as it was arranged by a SA PH friend of mine. I asked you awhile back to say hello to him for me if he still works for you and you said OK.

His name is not on the list either and unless something changed, he is one of your PH's? B.C. are his initials. Are your PH's required to be members?

Bruce Cronje was not employed by me in 2008, he is working for me now and doing a stirling job. He is a member , I just have not updated the list.

LHowell

There are some great PH's that are not on the list, I wish they would join. We hope to follow Zambia whereby you cannot renew your PH license with parks unless you are a member of the professional hunters association, maybe with laws in place it will help us stick together, if thats what it takes then so be it, as said earlier, with numbers we are stronger.

Noreaster,

Ivan carter is a member see an email from him dated a few months ago:
