Great reporting. Felt like I was there.

I have a 450 Dakota with an old 3 X (fixed power) Luepold on detachable rings. Would you always remove the scope if hunting elephant? It sounds like even a 3 x would have been a hindarance to your situational awareness.

I would appriciate all you other elephant hunters opinion on this too.

What a wonderful hunt - several elephants and buffalo in the the same hunt and all with doubles.

I plan on circulating a copy around, I just hope he does not show me picking my nose or scratching my ass TOO much. Ian has some very good footage.

Andy

I carried the 9,3x74R, with a 1.5-6x scope all of the time except when I knwe we were going after elephant or buff. Several times we would "get" into elephants while plains game hunting. The first time it happened Wayne said "Two solids please". Every time after that when we encountered elephants I would load 2 Solids into the 9,3. Muay time were were close to elephant and I would see how the sight picture looked with the scope. Even at very close range I would not feel handicapped with a scope on 1.5x. As the range increased I would turn up the power and think I could make brain shots all the way to 100 yards from the kneeling position. We spent a lot of tome in the very thisk jess where the scope at 3x might be too much. I say might because I did a lot of "experimenting" and felt a lot better with the scope on 1.5x, because of its tremendous field of view. Also sometimes it was dark in the jess I would just turn on the illuminated reticle and no matter how dark the shadow was I could instanly pick up the reticle.

I am very happy with this scope on my 9,3.

If I ever get to where I cannot use iron sights on a big bore double rifle effectively I will put a 1.25-4x24 Swarovski PV-1 on it. Take a look at this scope for you 450 Dakota.

A friend of mine just bought a 470 Chapuis. We have been discussing scopes and I am recommending this scope to him.
