Amazing footage taken by a guide friend of mine in Ruaha National Park. Although the ele was just a youngster, the lion wasn't about to give up his meal....

Excellent series of pictures! The confrontation must have been neat to witness.

On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died.

Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch...
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

Intense pictures! The lions focus...and check out the sand being kicked up by the ele in the 3rd pict, which looks like it is being blown by air coming out of his trunk.

How old is that lion?

Between 5 and 6 but not over 6 IMHO.

Look at the way the artery on the right front leg "swells" up with blood...Full of adrenalin no doubt! The young ele was just having some fun and play and at the lions mock charge, turned, squeeled like a pig and headed for the safety of its herd. The rest of the herd moved off quickly once the lion was first sighted as it had a few small youngsters with them. Had it been an old bull, the lion would not have mock charged but just given way till the bull moved on. Its not like the bull would have eaten the lions' meal.....

Nice pics - thanks for sharing. There are a pride of lions in Botswana that specialise in hunting elephants - this young ele might just "fight" himself into trouble if this was one of those lions.

Neat photos. I wonder if the lion killed the giraffe or stole it?
