Lions kill three in Guruve

Guruve - Stray lions have devoured three villagers in the Guruve, Kanyemba
area, causing panic among the villagers who have since resorted to staying
indoors till the authorities come to their rescue..

Chief Chapoto of Kanyemba said the area is no longer safe as the stray
beasts are threatening human and live stock lives.

"One person was killed on Tuesday and two more were devoured in the early
hours of Friday. The situation here is not safe and we are worried that if
authorities fail to react quickly the entire community is going to be
destroyed. The animals are so vicious and hungry. We call upon National
Parks to intervene," said Chief Chapoto.

Councilor for Kanyemba ward 1, Mr Kirisimas said school children were in
danger of the stray lions.

"We have since stopped pupils from going to school till the lions are
removed from the area. Our domestic animals are also in danger and we do not
know what to do," he said.

Kanyemba area is near the Zambezi River that boarders Zimbabwe and Zambia
and the area is infested with wild animals.

Efforts to get a comment on what measures have been put in place by National
Parks and Wild Life Authority were fruitless as the organisation's Public
Relations Manager Caroline Washaya-Moyo was not available at the time of
filing this report.

Ahh..the ghost of 'maswera se' returns...the area is notorious. I deployed on three occasions in that area to deal with man eaters, One of whom had the temerity to eat the senior parks scout at Mashumbi pools on his day off! (he was drunk and returning from a beer drink in mid afternoon)..

It just serves to remind folk that we are not always at the top of the food chain.

I'm surprised there are any animals left in Guruve. There is usually at least one snare for every square foot.

Have quite a bit I'd like to speak with you about. Don't worry - not a request for a bodyguard! Then again, if you are doing nothing in February....ha ha

Cheers, Dave

You can bet your ass on that.

As an official SCI scorer, Buzz's tape measure starts at 6 inches.

If that lion doesn't score at least 30 inches, I will loose all my faith in the safari business! Smiler

Guruve Families Flee Stray Lions
http://news.radiovop.com

22/01/2010 20:49:00

Guruve, January 23, 2010 - Stray lions have forced 50 Guruve families to
flee their homes amid reports that three people have already been fatally
attacked by the predators.

The stranded villagers of Kanyemba are now being housed at a nearby school.

"More than 50 families have been displaced since last week," said a National
Parks officer, who refused to be identified. " They are now staying at
Kapota School."

He said the villagers were being guarded by armed National Parks officers.

Kanyemba is a wild life area near the Zambezi River and along the border of
Zimbabwe and Zambia.
