Ivan is a great friend of mine...
And you know I am a Blaser R 93 user...

But I would not want to hunt elephant, without a double...

I never have...

But IF I did use a Bolt Rifle, it WOULD be a Blaser R 93.
I can say that his recommendation of a Heym Double is a good one.

How much is the ring on your finger worth? Does your wife have any jewellery? Sell something else but keep the Krieghoff for the same reasons you bought it.

I also really like the Heym- so much so I went and got measured up by Chris Sellers at the Heym booth at Dallas and ordered a 500. All that was oustanding was bank details to be supplied where upon I would send the full amount.

This was neither supplied at Dallas or at Reno where I went back twice to Chris. The last day at the show he said he would email me details-thats well over 1 month ago!

I would have though that it would be good marketing concidering the number of ele clients I take out a year.

For a comparison - it is like a client of mine signing a contract and me not bothering to send bank details for the deposit- basically a lost hunt! That would not happen and is as far as I am concerned it is bad work ethic.

Buzz

I will phone Chris tomorrow, and tell him to send you the details.

As I understand it, your gun is in the works.

Not to worry.

If your stard working bolt action is a Blaser, I think you would be better off staying with a Krieghoff double - the safety/cocking system is essentially the same.

I like the Heym's on average, they balance better (for me) than many of the Krieghoffs - however, I love the Krieghoffs cocking system.

NB- If you are going to change 'system' you need to put in alot of practice.- This may be the excuse you are looking for to go bunny busting with your new double, but if not...I went to the effort of getting a set of shotgun barrels for my Krieghoff and shooting trap and sporting, starting with the gun at ready and uncocked to get used to the 'system'.

Dr T,

you could always make a deal with someone on your Kriegy, take it to Mahenye, shoot your Elephant, bring it back, then sell it.

Or look at that picture you posted, say "what is wrong with my .500"", answer NOTHING, take it to Mahenye, shoot your Elephant, and keep it. Then try out a Heym and figure out how to convince your wife you need the Heym. Or, just get another Kriegy in 500-416 or 450/400 3 1/4 and be soooooooooooooo happy.

Bolt rifles are an objective thing...
Doubles are different, they're subjective...

Besides, the wood and metal work on the rifle in the picture is "to die for".

Dr. Tim,
I have a Heym in 500 N.E., for me it's the best balanced DR you can buy in the 15-20,000 dollar price range. I'm with Idaho Sharpshooter, take your K-gun to Africa shoot the ele bring it back and sell it get the Heym.

Dr. T.

The K is a good rifle and so is the B but I vote for the Heym. Balance, cost, regulation (which I prefer) etc.
all seem to work for me. Try out a Heym.

In that critical moment your ownership of that moment is worth more than trying to have made a good money decision.

I just sent my Heym down to the FTW Ranch for the SAAM Africa Trainning this week for some friends to give it a test drive.

Biebs,

If I don't shoot one this time I am having Jonny drop me off at that bridge over the Save River and I am jumping....you can have my double then...but you will have to go to Mahenye to get it! No I am fairly confident we will score on a nice one this time. Last year was an off year down there and this time I am going when it's really dry!

By the way Biebs, I am flying to San Antonio to shoot/pick up the Semprio and see the R-8 this weekend.

WHAT!! at fellow Texan that shoots a Blaser........say it aint so Confused

How did you not get arrested when you crossed state lines with that thing?................. rotflmo Just kidding of course..... Big Grin

I do agree to keep the double if you are going to hunt an elephant, you will reap so much more satisfaction from the hunt. As far as the R 93.....I like my bolt actions to actually be bolt actions......Lol. Plus with a bolt action you dont have to wear a pine sprig in your hat, which looks out of place in the Zimbabwean bush!!

What a good problem to have! The 416 Blaser would work fine on ele, but it wouldn't be as cool and romantic and nostalgic as thumping a jumbo with a double. Just look at your picture, above. Wouldn't be nearly as cool if you had a bolt rifle over your shoulder.

If it were me, I'd finish the elephant quest with the rifle I began it with, the 500 K-off. Then, after you've used it on jumbo and completed the quest and carried it 30 days total, see if you are able to part with it or not.

As you can see from my handle- I shoot a 470 Nitro..the King of the Bush...and you can buy all kinds of ammo for it right off the shelf from Federal, Hornady, Kynoch/Kynamco...and all kinds of old coridite ammo around too...
I really hate the heavy recoil of the 500 NE..especially in a Krieghof...and you don't really need it unless you are the PH...ie Buzz is buying one for the right purpose, BACKUP!! So be it if you can handle it WELL...most can't and it gives you a head ache after about 4 rounds in a double gun shoot!!
I hate to see the horrendous value drop of a NEW purchased Heym or Kreighoff, Cahpuis, Merkel...ie 50%!! If you age going to buy one...go to Guns International and buy an "experienced" rifle!!
My choice of a Continental gun is Heym, the K-guns are too light, too sharp a comb, and that safety is a real thumb raker!!
Now if you can't buy a nice English rifle, my choice today would be the Verney Carron from France...yes, I don't want the French jokes either, but...these are really nicely done doubles at a real good price-new or special order...you can find them on Guns International as well.
Good Luck Doc on that elephant...I took mine with a 1920's Manton 470 with Federal Premium solid...one shot, side brain, with legendary John Sharp PH at my side, 33 paces!!

Sadly, there can be but one King of the Bush and that happens to be the .500 NE. Ask folks that have "been there, done that" and they will tell you that the knockdown power of the .500 leaves King wannabe's in the dust. I, for one, do not ascribe to the argument that the PH needs a stopping rifle and the hunter can take whatever he wants. I want to be on equal or better footing than the PH when it comes to stopping power . . . you never know when the situation is going to go south.

A bit off topic, but why do you consider it necessary to give yourself a title?

Does it somehow raise your self esteem? bewildered

IIIIIIII have an MBA!!...one of the most hated and feared in the Corp Ivory Towers..."those G D MBA's...no expereince and making all the decisions...they will find out!!"

JMines- most can't handle a 500NE...not my opinion on the 470, it's that of the long past and very expereinced...like John Taylor...and now GENERAL Boddington!!

I don't agree on the new Merkel's...lots of lock up problems, action too small??

Doc- If you haven't bought it yet...I would rethink that purchase...shoot one first...that 500 will knock the crap out of you and bust your chops (ie cheek)!!...pardon the French!!
If you really can handle the 500NE recoil, buy one that is really comfortable to shoot...the Kreighoff is NOT!! Trust me, many smaller caliber K-s are put right back on the market for lots less money and the shooter's tail between his legs!!
Heym is a good one, I really think the new French Verney Carron is the ticket...unless you go English...then that is a different discussion!!
Cheers

I know a medical doctor whose practice is laser correction surgery for vision improvement.

I call him Doctor Don, always. I would not dream of dropping the "Doctor" part. I've had

several PHD holders, (not MD's) tell me to please not bother calling them "Doctor" and I

complied straight away. But if an MD told me to not bother it would make ME uncomfortable

because those folks really, REALLY sacrifice a lot of time to get that education. An MD would

have to tell me that THEY WOULD BE OFFENDED IF I DID NOT DROP THE "DOCTOR" TITLE

for me to be comfortable doing so.

Hey....I don't care what you guys call me, but I see about 120-130 hurting patients over 5-6 days a week at work, and all those people are very glad that I am "Dr." Tim.

Zambezi Hunters' trackers call me "Chebuhkute" which means "to shoot a fly", I suppose if I posted that name I would be accused of building my self esteem also....whatever. Roll Eyes

Tim unless you just have to have the new toy just shoot what you have. If you need something bigger just rent it from the ph. I would love to have a 40k double for my next ele hunt but it isnt practicall. I can spend the money on the gun or on actuall hunting. There is no option C for me. As such I would rather shoot an extra bull or two rather than own the weapon. Of course I really want it all but cant justify it at this point. So if I have to choose it is for me at least more trigger time on the big stuff.
