“His fame was so great that when the two newspapers announced his next African adventure, he was inundated with replies. He received a total of 1,200 letters from ‘colonels, captains, midshipmen and mechanics’. He was scornful of them all: They all knew Africa, were perfectly acclimatised, were quite sure they would please me, would do important services, save me from any number of troubles by their ingenuity and resources, take me up in balloons or by flying carriages, make us all invisible by their magic arts, or by the ‘science of magnetism’ magnetism’ would cause all savages to fall asleep while we might pass anywhere without trouble.” Who was he?

It was Stanley. I am reading a book called BLOOD RIVER : THE TERRIFYING JOURNEY THE WORLD’S MOST DANGEROUS COUNTRY. By TIM BUTCHER. He is a journalist who wanted to go deep into the Congo following the Congo River. Just started reading it, so have no idea how good it might be. I might post a few parts of it.

That had to be one very dangerous exploring of unknown territory, and natives. I doubt he got many takers to join him. That book seems like a nail biter on every page. ……......….........………. I think I did not explain this enough. The first post was from Stanley, wanting people to join him. The reporter who wrote the book is traveling alone. No idea what actually happened to him, as I have not read the book yet. I will post parts of it once I have read it.

I have read it. I rate it a 7 out of 10. Interesting but not compelling.

The reporter is experienced and a bit naive.

I started another new one today. On the opposite end of the world. "Journey to the Polar Sea" Franklin 1819. Started from London. Another of those ordeals of dragging boats by man pulled rope over rocks and shallows, water falls, and such. Saeed, enjoy your read! George "Gun Control is NOT about Guns' "It's about Control!!" You are more generous than me. I would not rate more than a 5. A bit sad that most of the book relates the past, relatively little from him and his journey in the wild.

I believe it was Trader Horn who said, “In Africa, the past still breathes.” That’s what I love about it the most. Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.
