Just finished reading Assegai. Good to have him back on track again after the last Egyptian " The Quest". That one was to much fiction and a bit over the ridge for my taste. Assegai starts good, but the flying stuff gets a bit over the rim... That love and sex bit is always a part of his books, guess we have to ok that as well. I´m with Craig here, the best one is "Sunbird" I have read all of Wilbur Smtih´s books, and I have learned quite a lot about southern Africa and its history, geography, culture, and flora and fauna from his writing.. For this, and for good entertainment, I tip my hat to Mr Smith and hope he will keep on writing for a long time yet Arild Iversen.

I'd have to vote for "Sunbird" as Smith's best novel..........part two in particular..........the battles fought against the overwhelming Bantu invasion are especially well written...the sense of sheer resolute courage in the face of undefeatable odds makes it his best novel, in my opinion. "Triumph of the Sun", which deals with the Mahdi rising is his second best and particuarly relevant to todays politics........... Verbera!, Iugula!, Iugula!!! Blair.

I agree with your assessment of "Triumph of the Sun". Smith describes an attack on a British infantry square by the Mahdi's army which is absolutely hair raising.
