Rozerem is a relatively new sleeping aid medication. It is not a controlled substance and is approved for longer term use. It comes in 4mg, 8mg., and 16mg. doses. The usual dose is 8mg. 30 minutes prior to "bedtime". They recomend not to take it after a high fat meal, apparently less effective due to adsorption issues. It apparently does not show rebound insomnia like most other meds so it should work well for traveling as well as well as true insomnia. Alchohol is contraindicated with its use,,, just like every other sleep aid medication. It is not supposed to be used if Sleep Apnea is an issue,, yep .. just like the rest of the meds.

I really have not had any trouble with jetlag for a long time. We did take Ambien one time though. We took it about an hour before getting on the flight. Big mistake! I felt a litte weird but Sadie was actually hallucinating as we went down the jetway. Neither of us really slept and we've not tried it again. I do find that 5mg of Valium which I have a prescription for works nicely without knocking you out. Of course if you can afford to upgrade to anything other than coach the trip will be much more comfortable and conduscive to sleep.

A career of being on call 24/7, 365 unless on vacation has left my system a mess as far as sleep goes. And you can throw in restless leg syndrome as well. Been to UCLA sleep clinic twice for studies/tests. Tried all the drugs in various combinations at various times.
Ambien happens to be the worst for me. Sleep walking and loss of memory.
Lots of physical exercise is the best form of sleep/relaxation therapy for me. I make sure I am in the best condition I can be when leaving for Africa, and don't drink much on the plane. I simply retreat into several good books, make notes in my journal, and walk the aisle for about 10 minutes every hour. Still don't sleep much on the plane, or in camp, but have a great time nevertheless.
