I am looking VERY hard at a safari in 2003.....primarily for 6-8 species of plains game, with the largest being either the kudu or eland. That being said, in the back of my mind I am seriously yearning for a cape buff. My question; plains game and/or buff, I am taking my 375 JDJ Contender and my CZ550 in 9.3x62. I am not planning on buying another rifle before I go, sooooo...I am looking for those with experience with such things...is the 9.3x62 adequate for buff? I have 2 loads in particular that my CZ is very fond of, the 286gr Partition and the 286gr Barnes solid. Both are 1" or better at 100 yds and I can keep them inside 1.75" from any position other than standing on my head. My point is, I think that I am up to the shooting ability....is the round adequate or might my PH think I'm nuts? I know the 375 JDJ has taken elephant....but I'm not using it on Buff.....this trip. Dr. Don Heath editor at African Hunter is the chief advocate of the 9.3X62 on Cape Buff that I know, and the cartridge will certainly do the job with the loads you mention. There are others in this forum.

As far as hunting with a handgun goes, you can do it some places but not in others.

A 286 gr bullet out your CZ 9.3X62 will work.
Bust most common 9.3 in Africa for big 5 game animals is 9.3X64 similar to .375 H&H.

You right your 375 JDJ can do the same job.

I know a lot of PH's that use the 9.3x62 for Buffalo and I have used it on many Buffalo..I like the 320 gr. Woodleigh softs ans solids but the 286 gr. solids work fine. The 9.3x62 seems to kill just like the 375 as far as I can tell.

The GS flat nose solid, if your gun will feed them is a near wonder bullet..and I will be using some of them this year in my double rifle..I beleive the smaller the bore the more need to use a solid and particularly on stright on shots.

Some hunters of known knowledge like the monolithic solids and I think a heavy GS Customs 9.3x62 would be a dandy choice, but have not used them on Buffalol.

I would have to say in Zim, Tanz and RSA the 9.3x62 outnumbers the 9.3x64 by 50 to 1...

Load up some of the above and have a great hunt, you will be armed sufficiently if your aim is true...

You are raight again, especialy about the 62s outnumbering the 64, and where do you get ammo if your ammo get lost. 62 no problem, 64 big problem

Your spot on....I really like the 9.3x64 but it is kinda like owning a wildcat and it only beat my fast barreled 9.3x62 by 100 FPS with the heavy bullets to at the very most by 150 FPS with light bullets.I didn't like that trade off.

The smartest move a USA based Company could make would be to bring out a 9.3x64 and have factory ammo available...I believe it to be the all time winner of the "all around" cartridge, but as it stands todays it's pretty much chopped liver!!

I always wanted to have a 9.3x64 but all those drawbacks make it no the best choise, if one can get ammo for it it should make a great cartridge, better than the 375 H&H or so I feel

Getting 9.3x64 Brass is no big deal. No, you cant' get it at WalMart, but I have a shop in Munich that sends it to me via air mail. $21/box, RWS, and it takes about 3 weeks. He speaks better English that I, has a web site and if I need to talk to him directly, it cost me 4.9 cents a minute to call Munich. No shop in my town carries .458 Lott, .416 Rigby or even .416 Rem, so should I need coponents for these calibers, I would have to mail order them the same as ordering 9.3x64. The cartridge is a hoot in a Mauser and worth having to wait the additional two weeks for the brass. Cobalt

Ofer here $21 is a lott of money, I can get 9.3x62 cases for a lott less. 9.3x62 Cases will cost me about 6$ a lott less if I use 30-06 cases.

I think the 375 Styer would be just as good if it flys, which unfortunately I doubt..mostly because of a poor rifle design and no fault of the cartridge.
