GunsCorePortable battery operated fan for Zim in Oct?
I will be in Zim the second half of October and it will be hot. What make of battery operated fan works best when trying to sleep in the heat?

Wal Mart has several. Run it at home to find out how long it will run on a battery. Then take the appropriate amount with you.

bwanamrmI used an O2 Camping fan I picked up at Academy, an area sporting goods store here in Texas. They make models that run on 2 to 5 D batteries. I have used both... the bigger the better. I carried one change of batteries with me and made it on a 10 day hunt but Mark makes a good suggestion to try it before you go.
One other piece of cooling equipment I would not leave without is a Frogg Togg Chilly Pad. Kind of a modern day chammy... wet and lay it on you, let the fan blow and stay as cool as you can in the Valley heat!
On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died.
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch...
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

GunsCoreMatt,
Your suggestion looks great except the wife might not approve. At least I could add to the thread on philandering clients!

FrostbitI would also suggest you consider some Frogg Toggs
Chilly Pads(get them on Ebay; way cheaper).
You can still use a fan but these pads feel like a refrigerator when you lay them on you while sleeping.

Tom In TennesseeWhile I go from insulated underware to a loin cloth when moving from the plateau to the valley in Zambia, I really never thought about freeze packs or personal fans....guess 68 year old minds don't keep up with new fangled gadgets....would the boy carry them for me on a Buffalo or Ele track and cool me off periodically??
While I have yet to be able to afford to hunt there, they sound like a great idea for CAR

bradheAssuming you have power, take a fan that uses D batteries, rechargables and a recharger. My fan eats batteries pretty fast.
Solar charger , charge during the day , fan at night ,if that works .
In the old safari movies I saw as a kid one of the natives would fan you !

Dutch44Check with your PH and see if they have one already running on the generator. Mine did and left it on for one-hour after I turned in. Never missed it during the night.

Do you need a fan in March/April?

Walter usually takes one with him. And he takes a large motor bike battery to power it.
Of course, he still cannot sleep because of one reason or another".
Mostly because he is not tired!
The rest of us, who have had to slog it for 18 hours, fall into blessful sleep.
Heat be damned

h kittleI used a battery fan from Wal-Mart when I went to Zim in 2009 with SBT. We were there in late October/early November. As I recall temps were over 100 most days. The worst of it was around noon when we would return for lunch and a short nap. The camps we were in had tin roofs. My son and I will be returning to the camp during the same time period this year.
I plan on taking a couple of hammocks to use during mid day. My battery fan worked fine the first few days, then went on the blink. It resumed working, when out of fustration I hit it real hard. On this upcoming trip we will be taking a fan for each of us along with a spare.
I took Nunn dehyradtion tablets. I but them in my water bottle and they seem to work just fine.
I will also be sure to take chilly pads.

GunsCoreThanks for all the info. I went to Walmart today and bought two 02 Cool fans to take with me at a whole $ 6 a piece. Got to love American capitalism.
