Guests I noticed in a recent thread Ray mentions that rifles could be loaned etc and the client should bring along some ammo or words to that effect ... I know we have loaned clients rifles/ammo at the ranch as required I am not 100% sure BUT reading through the import regulations it says: f. Possession of no more than the quantity of cartridges determined by the Registrar and specified on the permit for each firearm in respect of which the temporary import permit applies. NOW that begs the question .... Can a client bring with him some ammunition BUT NOT bring in a rifle, I dont believe he can BUT would stand corrected on the issue AND has anyone very recently ( as the laws are now tighter ) actually brought in ONLT AMMUNITION and if so was it done on the same import form or what All serious comment welcome Regards, Peter

Peter, I'm questioning the same thing, as I'd like to bring with me to Zim a few boxes of shotgun shells (up to the 11lb limit). Anybody fly through SA w/ammo?

Bill, We went through J'burg on SAA, on to Vic Falls on SAA, so didnot clear custom until Vic Falls. We had extra ammo (458 Lott) for one of PHs. Chap asked why no rifle? Told him I was going to shoot it in PH's rifle, no problem. If you have to clear Cutoms at J'burg, then I don't know. Sorry, only partial help,

From PHASA's website: "Firearm / Ammunition Allowances and Specifications 1. No more than one firearm per caliber and 200 rounds per firearm will be permitted. No ammunition for other rifle calibers will be permitted." Regards, Terry Msasi haogopi mwiba [A hunter is not afraid of thorns]

Normally, no, you cannot bring ammo in. However, there is always a loop hole! In my case I brought some 30-06 ammo over for a friend and got it in despite my not having a 30-06 with me. How you ask? Was this legal? Yes! The reason I got to bring it in is because my 4457 has my 30-06 info on the list (all of my rifles are listed on it). To the SAPS folks this meant I owned such a gun and since I did, even thoug I did not have it with me, I could have the ammo. Does it make sense? Hell no! But I wasn't about to argue with them either. I delivered my ammo peacefully. ~Ann

Ann, Was this since the new laws came into effect? I wonder if all the SAPS personel would interpret your "loophole" the same way? You might have just gotten lucky. Regards, Terry Msasi haogopi mwiba [A hunter is not afraid of thorns]

Terry, they were quite sincere. And it was Inspector Conroy, he seemed to be the ranking person there. ~Ann

Playing devils advocate for one moment .. What if (Inspector Conroy) of the FBI was sick on leave or on the town having fun with the hoodlums, does the other chap at the security counter also say YES it is OK or does he pick his nose scratch his backside and say WE HAVE A PROBLEM HOUSTON and look at you with that BLANK STARE that tells me in Africa grease my palm BWANA and the garden will be all rosy again !!!! You know to be 200% certain with all the new laws I would personally CONTACT PHASA and ask the question or maybe Steve Shakari Robinson whom goes in and out Jo-burg like a yo yo might have some idea ?? I really want all hunters to be clear as daylight on if it is (totally legal) to take ammo without a rifle or does it depends on how big a hangover the police chap on duty has on any particular day (-: Peter
