Took a little weekend get away with the wife to Chanute Kansas the other day. We stayed at the Tioga Hotel and visited the Safari Museum. I have a question to anybody that would know some trivia. What rifles did Osa use to guard her husband as he filmed the more dangerous animals? There were several pictures of her with an 1895. Was it a 405? I also saw a film with her and she was shooting a bolt rifle. I thought I saw a double rifle but it may have been a shotgun. I asked the lady curator and she rolled her eyes at me. She said it was a shame that people were still hunting in Africa. As she had just returned from her first trip to the continent and the country of South Africa and stated that there were NO animals running free except in reserves and parks. I asked here about other countries and she said "nope not there either". Being how I haven't even been once I decided I was not equipped to argue and just bought a book.

Why would they hire a curator with that opinion. She probably never got off the "tared roads" and in all likely hood never got off of the M1 or M2. I doubt if you see many Whitetails traveling thru Kansas on the Interstates at 80mph.

Hopefully that lady is only a docent and not the curator. Neat little museum dedicated to the lives and accomplishments of two very interesting people. NRA Life Member, Band of Bubbas Charter Member, PGCA, DRSS. Shoot & hunt with vintage classics.

Osa Johnson wrote a book "I Married Adventure" that was one of my favorite reads as a teenager.

You can see plenty lying on the shoulders of I-35, next to the raccoons, armadillos, skunks and other animals frequently taken point blank range with '06 Fords and Chevys. Caleb

I guess I am spoiled (if that is the proper term) as US 220 from Bedford, Pa to Cumberland Md has more whitetails killed by motor trafic per mile than any streach of highway in the US.

Need some help here, 1952? NBC Adventures of Osa Johnson...... The two scenes I remember clearly was Osa stopping an Elephant with a double, and standing next to an Elephant leg holding umbrellas Jim "Bwana Umfundi" NRA

Not a word is mentioned about hunting on the museum's website.

She's damn lucky there is hunting or the only animals she would have seen on her "safari" - fenced or otherwise, would have been domestic cattle and sheep.

I believe in one of her books they give a list of everything they were taking on safari including the rifles and ammunition. It was many trucks.

Thanks for the link! I guess I should have just read my book. I am in the middle of Captstick's "Man Called Lion" and can't keep track of two stories at one time. That is a great thread!

Glad to be of help. Here is another one with links to a lot of photos to enjoy that came up when I did a search for the "arsenal" thread. "Osa & Martin Johnson Photo Archive" A pretty nice impala! \ The lady with her Thomas Bland double in .470 NE and a black rhino. (Original thread provided by BFaucett - thanks Bob!)
