Terry W. is at it again in the "Walnut Hill" back page of Rifle #273, March-April 2014, it goes like this:
horse
(quote)
Over the past 20 years, a host of videos have been made, purporting to show Cape buffalo hunting.
One infamous series was made by an American who deliberately wounded younger, smaller bulls with a small-caliber rifle, waited a while,
then went in and provoked a charge. Camera angles and the wonders of editing resulted in some hair-raising footage,
if you didn't know what was really happening. If it ended there,it would be bad enough. Alas, it didn't.
Now, we get people coming back from Africa bragging about doing exactly the same thing and expounding on how the charge
"enriched the experience."

(end quote)

I am shocked to see such gossip in a mainstream publication instead of on the internet!
"One infamous series" of videos, made by an "American."
Who the heck could that American be?

Wieland is obviously a knowledgeable guy, but damn he is such a Debbie Downer most of the time.

You can like Sullivan or dislike him, admire him or not, respect him or not, believe the rumors or not. Doesn't add up to a hill of beans either way, but you have to admire his shooting skills.

The quote below from TW below implies Sullivan's standing charges and shooting charging animals is fake, all camera angles and editing, and that TW is "in the know," which, since he wasn't there for any of them, is just total rubbish.

He lost my respect as a writer LONG ago.

Gents:
A few questions.
Who is Terry Wieland exactly?
I know he's an author but the only hunt mag I read is the African Hunter and he is not published there. I saw one of his books on cartridges and it was so full of errors I never looked for anything from him again. Where can I see some of his stuff? What is he known for?
Cheers,
Cal

Cal….. Weiland is supposedly the shooting editor for Grays Sporting Journal and on line it says he is also a columnist for Rifle and Handloader magazines. I have only seen his columns in Safari Times.

I don't read them very often as I have found they tend to be a wee bit dull.

Cal, he wrote a couple of books, "Dangerous Game Rifles" and "The Magic of Big Game". The books are okay.

He seems to know a lot about British rifles and shotguns and Mausers.

He dislikes Geoff Miller of California Rigby; sued him for libel I think. He does not care for Butch Searcy's rifles and makes that clear.

He tends to have a negative and cynical tone in his writings.

I met him at SCI once and he complained about having to sign books so I told him not to sign mine.

What a dick. I would tell him where to file his book under the Dewey Decimal system.

If I recall, I think I have read his books, and frankly, wasn't too impressed with them.

Terry W. does write with the tone of an author who has had one of his books filed up his Dewey Decimal, where the sun don't shine.
His hagiography published in 2000 was interesting, "A View from a Tall Hill, Robert Ruark in Africa."
But since then he is becoming more and more like holycowshootawhey in his writings and ballistics expertise.
Sometimes I can't help but take a look in passing. Rubbernecking.
Shocking allegations this time. Wink

I bought Terry’s book DANGEROUS GAME RIFLES and read it cover to cover. I did a critic’s assessment of it here on AR some years ago. Unfortunately I made the mistake of pointing out his mistakes, and received a PM from another author, who seems to be a friend of Terry. The other author informed me that Terry was diligent in his research of the rifles mentioned in that book, and that I had done him a disservice with my book report. The other author gave me his personal e-mail address so I could check with him if I needed to know anything about big bore rifles.

That book is still on my book shelf and I’ve been trying to find enough time to read it again, with a high-lighter in hand to highlight the mistakes in that book so they are easier to find for quoting.

When I get them all located I will e-mail the other author to see if he can correct my opinion of them.

I have to give TW a little credit.
When I was getting ready for my 1st safari & did not know of AR's existence, I read an article by him about traveling with ammo.
It saved me some problems that I did not know existed.
I was also using a local travel agent that was no help whatsoever.

I actually shared a camp with him twice for a night each time. He was coming in and I was going out. The first time my reaction was that he was a complete jerk. The second time he was quite pleasant.
I wasn't impressed with his book on big game rifles either but did like A View from a Tall Hill. He does seem to be writing with an attitude the last couple of years.
