SCI's 2021 Convention cancellation announcement: "SCI Statement on 2021 Convention After much contemplation and exhaustive effort, Safari Club International (SCI) has made the difficult decision to cancel its 2021 Hunters’ Convention. COVID-19-related restrictions imposed by the state of Nevada and city of Las Vegas to ensure a safe event environment during the ongoing pandemic has made it impossible to conduct a successful event for our members and exhibitors, or serve the greater good of wildlife conservation. For 49 consecutive years SCI has conducted its annual convention, bringing together from around the world, hunters, exhibitors, conservation stakeholders, and generations of SCI members. This annual event celebrates hunter advocacy, raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for wildlife conservation, and enables the planning of hunts that further support conservation on every continent. It is one of the most anticipated gatherings of the year not only for the reasons above but also because it is the one week that our community can rely upon to renew friendships and reignite the fire that drives us all to carry on the traditions of hunting. We did not reach this decision lightly. Throughout the turmoil of 2020 SCI has remained on watch. We have defended hunting in California and on Capitol Hill; we have supported wildlife conservation on the plains of Wyoming and plateaus of Africa; and we worked with legislators and the Trump Administration on the Great American Outdoor Act, history’s greatest outdoor legislative achievement. Working hand in hand with the Safari Club International Foundation (SCIF), we were able to raise a record amount of money for hunter education and conservation. Our work will proceed apace despite this unfortunate cancellation. Despite our disappointment with this development, SCI will be there for our members and exhibitors in 2022 to reflect on all these accomplishments and celebrate them together. The 2022 Convention will take place in Las Vegas and will be a celebration of our hunting heritage and the perseverance we all needed to get through this, together."

Called it
The situation is still the same. Like jdollar says, no vaccine = no big events, especially not indoor events. And especially not events with a lot of older and overweight people. But...I still expect the first results from phase III vaccine trial (about efficacy) to come out this month, and from other trials in the next 2 months. But these trials need 2 reviews, and then be reviewed by regulatory bodies, and then the production and significant logistical challenges sorted. How to transport hunderds of millions of doses of a vaccine which need to transported and stored at -112 Fahrenheit (-80C). There will be months between first phase III trial reviews and first big roll out of vaccination schemes.

Why does the convention move to Nashville is the real question for me. Formerly "Nganga"

I agree! I think having it back in Vegas at Mandalay Bay just makes sense for multiple reasons. Maybe Vegas should be the permanent home for the SCI show. Mark MARK H. I agree 100%. No interest in Nashville on my part. I like the spectacle of Vegas.

Personally, I agree with you Steve. I think the logic was that the East coast people had serious travel for so long that perhaps it was time to make is easier on the east coast people. Plus they were going to the NRA model of moving locations . .

Perhaps you are correct. Time will tell. Houston just e mailed vendors telling them that their show was absolutely on and invited them to participate.

Is it still a convention if nobody shows up? I think they just faced reality and made the sensible decision. Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

Mike: I think you're on to something. In my opinion, it might have been actually based upon a couple of things: the lack of significant sign-ups to date, both of exhibitors and attendees, in conjunction with the Nevada Governor's restrictions. Of course, we the public, wouldn't have those figures at our fingertips. I do know that many other conventions scheduled for Las Vegas and Reno actually backed out of their dates a lot earlier.

I'm planning to go to DSC if it happens. And, I'm going to Tanzania in 2021. Magufuli says the virus is no problem in Tanzania and you should just go to mass and pray. I'll be praying, but I've been avoiding mass. Finally, I have a semi-legit excuse.

After nearly two decades we pulled out of SCI this year as limited attendance just did not deliver a show that was equal to cost of attending. Over the last ten years bookings at DSC are head and shoulders above that of SCI. Nothing political in my statement, just facts, and a subsequent business decision. Dave Fulson

GSCO just cancelled. The Harrisburg show cancelled. Dallas has a surge in cases. I cannot imagine it will happen.

I did talk to the DSC exhibitors manager about 2 hrs ago. She says DSC is moving forward with the 2021 show, and "plans" to have the show unless the city shuts em down. That's all I know!
