Has anyone ever done this? I'm flying Delta to Atlanta, SAA to Jo'berg and SA Airlink to Polokwane. Hassles, excess fees, Jailtime???? Who Knows? Regards Elmo

No problem with Delta. They prefer that you only have two guns per case, but have a policy that they can charge you an extra $40/gun if they notice it. SAA on the other hand may be a problem. Their policy says: Sporting firearms consisting of not more than: o One rifle case containing not more than two rifles, 5 Kg (10 LB) of ammunition, one shooting mat, noise suppressers and small rifle tools; o Two shotguns and two shotgun cases. If you fly on KLM, 3 guns per case is fine.

Thanks Spring I have the regs for both airlines, but neither one specificaly addresses travel with rifles and shotguns at the same time, as far as I can tell. I wonder if the knuckleheads can tell the difference between the two Elmo PS. Is SA Airlink part of SAA? PSS. My 4457 form lists both rifles and the shotgun on one form. If I leave the shotgun or one of the rifles at home, will I raise any eyebrows bringing two firearms home when the 4457 lists three?

It doesn't matter what is on the 4457 in terms of what you have with you and what happens to be listed. You'll just need the guns you have with you on there somewhere. Anything extra that is listed on there that you don't have with you is no problem as the 4457 simply let's you bring into the US items without having to pay an import duty.

Well, I just returned on SAA two weeks ago and I had two rifles and one shotgun in my two-layer guncase. When the counter agent asked me how many guns I had, I simply said "two rifles." Coming back, I had to show that the two rifles were unloaded, and since they were on the top layer, I was able to show them without revealing that I had a shotgun underneath. I know I was taking a chance, but there is a large "gray area" in the rules that I felt would protect me if caught. The rules say "no more than two rifles per case -- which is all I had. BTW, the country you are importing to could care less how many are in a single case, as long as you are importing no more than three firearms.

very nice Leon!!! I should have talked to you before I went! You know when I checked in in JFK no one even asked how many guns I had or did anyone ask me how much ammo! I was under 11 pounds but I wanted to bring a shotgun with a few boxes of shells. "America's Meat - - - SPAM" As always, Good Hunting!!! Widowmaker416

Well, I e-mailed Delta and SAA about this. Delta hasn't responded yet. SAA send me this reply (spelling included) "The riffles may be accepted as one of the two pieces you are entitled to from the USA. Each passenger is entitled to two pieces each not weighing more than 32kg." Clear as Mud! GAHUNTER Man, you got more guts than I do! Elmo
