7. August in Mozambique for another buffalo and whatever other swamp game shows up, then RSA for Zebra, bushpig, gemsbok or waterbuck or nyala. Someday I really want a leopard, hippo and big crocodile, PAC elephant, lioness (budget bwana, here) serious bird shoot and tigerfish. Diving and spearfishing there is a possibility, too.

1. 2 Dedicated hunting trips, plus hunting on our "trans african trip".

2. Hunting; 20 days
Travelling in africa; over a year.

3. Hunted in Zimbabwe, Namibia and RSA. And then there is the general travel in Morocco, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Niger, Chad, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, RSA, Zim, Botswana, and Namibia.

4. Eland, Kudu, Oryx, Reedbuck, Damara Dikdik, Blesbok, Warthog, Widebeest, Impala, Bushpig (which I didn't get!).

5. 1998
6. 2000 was the last hunting trip, and 2002/2003 was the year we drove around africa.

7. Buff hunt is next on my list (next year?), and another trans african trip via the west coast south to north has been forming in my mind (perhaps in 2.5 years?)

Dear Friends,

I am sorry that this is a longer response, but looking over all the responses, it occurred to me how easy it is for non-hunters to look at this as just numbers. I have been to Africa to hunt seven times starting in 1996, and it has become a real part of my life defining who I am: that crazy SOB who goes hunting in Africa all the time! I have developed real friendships with persons I've hunted with. There are not a straighter, more accommodating group of people in the world. This has lead to a love of Africa, and a concern for the continent and its people. This is about more than days in the field and animals taken. Being a tourist and time around the camp fire or dinner table has been as rewarding as time in the field.

I keep diaries of every hunt and record daily the activities, including the stalks and shots, with still and video cameras. I am working this up into some hunting DVD's. (No, I am not ready for prime time and won't share yet.) My "heroes" are Aagard and Bartlett who I appreciate for their observations and honesty. I have never "caught them out" on anything. I have little patience with those who have never been there and have an opinion. I have really enjoyed my "ignore" button recently.

I have hunted RSA, Zim, and Namibia. I have hunted only one dangerous species: buffalo. I have taken the following plains game: Kudu, Bushbuck (2), Mt. Reedbuck (3), Common Springbok, Black Springbok, White Springbok, Kalahari Springbok, Blesbok, Impala, Val Rehbok, Black Wildebeste, Blue Wildebeste (2), Red Hartebeste, Oribi, Grey Duiker, Common Reedbuck, Baboon, Spotted Hyena, Eland, Klipspringer, Burchell's and Hartmann's Zebras, Civit cat, Gemsbok (2), Steenbok, Blue Duiker, Cape Grysbok, Bushpig, Lynx, Nyala, Waterbuck, Bontebok, and White Blesbok. My last trip was 2003. My next trip is in July 2005 to Tanzania for 28 days for Lion, Leopard, Elephant (if we get very lucky), and all the plains game that one can take.

I have hunted inside fences, which most of the time are not even seen or "in play," everywhere but northern Zim, and have had only one "bad" experience inside wire. (A zebra ran to the corner of the farm, where it was in fact pinned against a fence line, and I refused to take the shot under those conditions.) I have had only one trip when we did not take all the animals on the dance card, and that was beyond the control of my ph. We went through Kruger on that trip with two ph's and it was one of our most memorable trips!

On each of our trips, looking back over my records, I have taken at least one 30 caliber magnum. My brother, who accompanied me on five of the trips, uses a 7mmRemMag, which we have both used to take about a third of the animals we together have taken. On over half of our hunts, I have taken either a .375HH or a 9.3x62. I like the 250gr BT in 9.3 for shooting plains game. I have come to love the 9.3x62 which is an incredibly balanced, versatile rifle. I like the 300gr Hornady's, fmj and soft point, in .375 for practice loads, and shoot Federal Premiums (soft point and solids) for dangerous game. I shoot 180gr partitions now in all .308 cartridges.

I'm just getting my feet wet...

Been to RSA once, last August on a 7-day PG hunt. Took a Gemsbok, Blesbok, Impala, Springbok and Warthog. Great experience and thankful for my first taste of Africa.

Leave in 6 weeks for Northern RSA near Limpopo River & Zim/Bots borders with my 17-year old son for SG Kudu, Bushbuck, Common Reedbuck, Waterbuck, Zebra, Warthog, Impala, Steenbok, Klipspringer, Baboons, Vervets, etc. 7 days with 7 hunters in camp (3 first-timers) with 4 PH's, stone huts/thatched roofs, etc. Will be hunting with John Abraham of Madubula Safari's and Gary Reeder of handgun hunting fame.

Am planning a tentative DG hunt for a couple Cape Buff in summer of 2006. Will be carrying a B-A 416 Rem Mag. Don't think one buff will be enough. Would enjoy a cull hunt and may get my chance if I can swing it with the calendar.

I just hope the hunting in Africa is still around so I can enjoy a few more hunts with my son...before I get too old to run the bush.

The first time I went to Africa I thought it would be just another country to see and as a sidelight hunt for some plains game ---- Wrong! I got the fever and life has not been the same since.

1. Once, will be fixed in June
2. Nine days in the bush after five days in Cape Town, after being in the bush I wished I had just gone straight there.
3. RSA
4. Hunted kudu, nyala, waterbuck, impala, zebra. Took a nice kudu (my main goal), zebra, and impala. That was before I added on to the house and did not know where I could put anything.
5. and 6. 2000.
7. I am leaving in june to Zimbabwe for my first dangerous game safari for buffalo, leopard, sable, waterbuck, nyala, bushbuck, eland etc., etc. Got plenty of space to fill now. After my first safari I was concerned that there was no way a second trip could surpass the first ( elephant charging, hippo chased into camp by nine lions) but by moving up to dangerous game I am looking forward to an even better trip.

Thanks Canuck for starting the thread.

Wow. This is awesome! Thank you all for taking the time to participate...I am very impressed with the response. I have realized for some time that the collective experience here is staggering, but I think the final tally will be much bigger than I would have even guessed.

Before I add up them up, I will wait a little longer for a few other guys to post. There are still a few "big hitters" out there that I'd like to add if they don't mind (LV Eric, T. Carr, T. Blauwkamp....). And there are many others that come to mind as well ...470Mbogo, Nickudu, RIP, John S, Robgunbuilder.....

If any regulars that I have mentioned (or not) do not want to post this kind of info publicly, but wouldn't mind sharing it for the sake of completeness, please feel free to PM it to me (in confidence). Or just PM me and tell me not to bother to wait!!

We are really blessed to have a place like this. Where else could you get exposure to this much African experience, even for a fee??

Best regards,
Canuck

Sorry for the delay, my mom has been sick and I havent been around much.

I have hunted 103 days in the past 3 years and shot right about 200+/- head of game(9 elephants, 6 lions, 13 or 14 buff, 3 giraffe, 2 sable) all in Zimbabwe.

I was suppost to be there now on a ele hunt but had to CXL because of my moms cancer, still on track to go later this year god willing, also made a deposit for Tanz in sept. as well. Hope I can make both trips.
