Jumbo kills man

The Herald, May 8,2007

A CHARGING elephant on Sunday trampled a 48-year-old Mushumbi Pools man to death while his wife, son and other villagers watched helplessly.

Mendas Muzerengeni was killed at around 8pm when he had gone out to scare the animals from his field.

Mashonaland Central police spokesman Inspector Michael Munyikwa confirmed the incident saying the man was in the company of his son Taxi (17) when the incident occurred.

Insp Munyikwa said the two positioned themselves at different spots and began making noise in a bid to scare away the elephants.

One of the jumbos got irritated and charged towards Muzerengeni.

It gored Muzerengeni with its tusks and carried him for about 300 metres.

The man’s wife Ms Fenisia Mhako and other villagers, who had rushed to the scene after hearing Muzerengeni’s screams, watched helplessly from a distance. — HR.

Darn, my dyslexia kicked in again... when I first saw the topic I thought it was Jim Zumbo kills man!

Actually, I killed both of my elephants a few miles from Mushimbi Pools in 2005. There were some damn cheeky cows in that area!

I read it that way the first time too. First thought was what kind of gun he used.

It did: Zim-Jumbo. The man's death was probably due to the fact that the man was hunting with an AK-47 or some other "assault" style rifle, when Zim-Jumbo ran into him, and Zim-Jumbo's anger got the best of him. . . dancing

A variation on this theme would make a good New York Post headline:

"Jim Zumbo Kills Zim Jumbo"

Or vice versa, as the case may be.

I understand that this unfortunate gentleman was a also tracker of some 20 years, and I am sure some of you guys hunted behind him in Chewore North, among other areas. He probably knew elephant better then any of us.

INDEED, from Andy Hunter's e-mail it was his tracker, of some 15 years.

Hunted with Mendas a couple times.

Rest in Peace.
