I took three elephants with it last year and the penetration was excellent and no visable deformation from a 458 Win.

Used it on elephant last year. Recovered one and stuck back in the case and could not tell it had been fired.

See them in action nearly every safari we film in Africa for DG. Preform wonderfully.

Three elephants and one buffalo (would'a been DSX's instead DGS's for the buff, but solids were in the gun when the damn thing came from nowhere and tried to kill me Eeker).

September 2009 Tuskless
Side brain with .458 Win Mag was a shoot through, DRT. Range <20 yards.

March 2010 Bull
Side brain with .416 Ruger was a shoot through, DRT. Range 20 yards?

September 2011 Tuskless
Heart shot with .450 N.E. with bullet recovered under far side skin, elephant fell upon impact, regained feet and left barrel anchored her. You got to love double rifles. Second shot was frontal, bullet recovered in intestines. Both bullets were just fine with a tiny bit of lead protruding from bottom, al a Woodleighs sometimes do. Range 20 to 30 yards???

September 2008 Buffalo Bull
Three shots to the chest. I assume the first was lost in the guts after a frontal heart shot, second two, as the buffalo was turned, exited and killed a water skier in France for all I know. Range <15 yards to where a bayonet would have been useful.

I love the things. I'm having a .404 Jeffery built and have already arranged for the regulation to be with Hornady factory DGS bullets.

JudgeG ... just counting time 'til I am again finding balm in Gilead chilled out somewhere in the Selous.

I'm never one to correct a judge, but JudgeG may be a little optimistic for his hunt next September...

I made up all the other stuff I wrote (and faked the pictures, too) so why can't I lie in advance? Big Grin

Thanks for the correction. I need it often and my mother and my daughters do it well.

Anyway.... I hope to again hunt tuskless in July in Zimbabwe while my daughter hunts a buffalo. I haven't chosen the rifle yet, but odds are that it will be loaded with factory DGS bullets.

After a week with Ernest in Zim, I'll attest to the fact that corrections are warranted and frequent !!!!!!!!!!!

JudgeG

Have you used any of the DGX bullets and if so have you been just as happy with them as the DGS?

Thanks

Nothing but a couple of bait impala and they made .416 sized holes as one would expect.

I used my 458 Acc Rel with 500 grs Hornady DGS and 500 grs Barnes Banded Solids this Sep/Oct for three elephants in Zim. They penetrate immensely well. Exit on all head shots and as well on multiple broadside shots (fired post mortem with the ele in sfinx position) - only recovered bullets were when shot through the hip angling towards opposite shoulder. They were found in the shoulder muskles and neck skin. 6-8 feet penetration. Similar performance from the 500 grs Barnes Banded Solids. Both bullets fired at a muzzlevel of 2300 fps.

My hunting buddy and I shot thirty buffalo in Australia this summer. We used Federal premium with Barnes Bullets, Remington PSP's and Hornady DGS out of 375 H+H and 416 Rigby.

The only problem we had was when I lined up on a nice bull for a shot with my 375 and when I pulled the trigger it failed to go boom. I worked the bolt and chambered a new round and then proceeded to try my luck again.Next shot was fine.

After the melee was over I recovered the factory loaded 375 Hornady DGS and examined it.The primer was struck appropriately with a good dent as evidence. All rounds since ,both factory and reloads have fired without fail.

I sent a note to Hornady after I returned home explaining what had happened and asking if they had any problems with this particular lot of bullets, or this type of load in general.

THEY EVIDENTLY DID NOT THINK MY ENQUIRY WORTHY OF A RESPONSE

I am likely to try another option when I hunt elephant in Namibia this year.

We seldom get to choose
But I've seen them go both ways
And I would rather go out in a blaze of glory
Than to slowly rot away!

Get a good striker spring like a Wolff.Your issue may be coming from a broken spring retaining pin or a broken bolt stop pin. These are what caused my misfires on various rifles and they all came to an end when I fixed the gun.You can also clean, lube and polish up the inside of the bolt.I don't blame the guy for not returning your call because primers just don't do these sort of things rotflmo

Ross,
I have used the Hornady .404 Jeffrey DGS and DGX bullets on my last two hunts with Martin Pieters in the Omay on elephant and buffalo and have had excellent results. Two complete pass throughs on the elephant brain shots with the DGS. The DGX has worked well on buff chest shots and I have recovered DGS and DGX bullets that show performance... will post pictures if I can figure out how to get them to Photobucket with the wife's new Mac! Just when I had it figured out in the PC environment...

The new Hornady bullets, particularly the DGX, are huge improvements over the Interbonds!

IMO; The hunting community and especially the North American big bore shooting community owe a lot to Hornady for help reviving the ability to economically use their guns.
I would offer to buy Steve Hornady a nice dinner at the DSC if he would accept. A small token of gratitude for what he has done to support this small niche in the market we all seem to enjoy.
A few years back where could any of us been able to obtain ammo and brass for a 404J,416 Rigby, 9.3 X 74, 470NE, 500NE, 450/400, 458Lott without long waits or breaking the bank with the likes of Federal or Norma. It has brought these guns a bit more into the mainstream.
Do you think Sabati would have brought out their inexpensive offerings if there was not a economical ammo offering available? NO WAY!
Thanks Steve!

It's hard to argue with bullets that work in ammunition costing 1/2 of what the competitors charge.

For sure, we should all be thanking Steve Hornady for producing quality big bore ammunition in many calibers at 1/2 the cost of his competition! Even if you load your own, he deserves your thanks and good wishes.

Thanks Steve!
