Just came back from the range and my softs seem to shoot in the same spot as my 300 grain woodleigh solids. This was the case in my sako and now in my pre 64 model 70. Only problem is federal doesnt load woodleighs in solid any more so I have just enough for this years trip. What solids do you use ? Does anybody use federals in sledgehammer solid??

You could get some custom handloads with Woodleigh solids at about the same velocity..but first I would try all the factory solids until I found one that hit POI with my Federal softs...The sledghammers used to have a good reputation, but I have been lead to understand that these Speer Sledghammers are not as stout as the older ones, but thats just rumor on my part...

I have never seen any of the modern solids fail on buffalo, and have only heard of a couple that did, most of the solid failures over the last 200 years have been on elephants...

Ive used the woodleighs on elephant with amazing penetration. Shot one in the armpit and broke the offside shoulder. Only went a few yards before falling down. They seemed to work well on buffalo also. I dont like to mess with success but I also like using factory loads for hunting dangerous game.

I haven't used them on game, but what, if anything, is wrong with the 300 grain .375 Hornady solids? They are relatively inexpensive and usually available.

Mamba,

I have use the Federal Sledgehammers and like them. My BRNO likes the 300gr Nosler Partitions and when I switch to the solids the rifle is still spot on.

LE 270,

Nothing wrong with the Hornady solids. They apparently don't carry the "designer" lable so desired.
