Assumiing that I'm flying into Zim via SA on SAA, is there any reason why I couldn't bring three rifles on safari (government regulations, airline limits, etc.)?

Not that I know of, but I am sure SAA only allows 2 rifles in a case. This creates baggage problems if only one person is traveling. I have taken 3 many times, but it is more hassle than it used to be. Nice if on longer, many species hunts.

tsibindi...three is a PITA! Two is plenty. Less ammo, less weight, less hassle.
I'm down to taking only one, and it sure makes life simple...for me.
16 August 2007, 22:52
butchlocmost if not all the airlines limit you to 2 per case, which means you end up with with an extra bag and charge. also i doubt the need for 3. I usually take doubles and one has extra shotgun barrels which i take & do a bit of birding, but i've never had cause to take 3 rifles. other than that there are no regs. from zim that would stop you

MARK H. YOUNGPete,
Take the advise you've been given and just take 2 rifles. You'll avoid a big pain in the butt while traveling and you just don't need 3.

L. David KeithAmmo limit is 11 lbs (US) but SAA can claim an 8 lb limit. Thing to do is check your guns from home to Zim. Weight limit is 50 lbs or pay overages, unless your flying Buisiness class which is 70 lbs. Ask 10 different airline employees and you'll likely get 10 different answers. It is OK to take 3 guns to Zim, but getting there without hassle will be the question. LDK

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

talentrecWow, that was fast!
So aside from excess baggage charges, there isn't an issue?
17 August 2007, 00:07
CRUSHERtake an extra single rifle case to the airport with you if they bitch about weight or 3 in one case use the extra case extra case is cheaper than over weight bag make it a takedown for the double and you will be under size and weight on extra bag.if they dont bitch go as planned

MikelravyHow are you getting from the airport to the hunting area? You may get dinged for excess baggage on a charter as well.

Balla BallaWE have a hunter from New Zealand hunting at our SA & Zambia ranches at this time. He has travelled ex: NZ via Australia to JNB and connected to Pietersburg and today is connecting to Livingstone (ALL on SAA) with (three rifles + ammo)
He has not experienced any problems so far and is on route to Zambia
Cheers, Peter

LRH270If one of them is a .375, why would you even need 2 rifles?

We're just back from Zim and used the .375 H&H on everything from Cape Buff to Francolin (that isn't a typo).
That said, I'm also the guy who won't drive from Nevada to Texas without at least 6 to 8 guns in the car.

talentrecActually, I'm thinking 416 Rem for the big stuff, 375 as back-up and a 22 Hornet for the small stuff.
17 August 2007, 00:58
butchlocyou won't need the hornet just use solids in the 375. they just punch a hole thru little stuff
17 August 2007, 02:20
talentrecWho said anything about need?

This is about want! Given the overall cost of the trip, an extra hundred or two to bring an extra rifle is a fairly small increse in cost.
17 August 2007, 05:24
larryshoresTake the hornet. I have done it before. It is fun.

It is easy to take 3 long guns if you use 2 Tuf-Pac's as your checked luggage.
You can put your rifles and other stuff in the TP's.
I did just that on my last trip to Zim.
Actually I had 2 doubles, 2 drillings and a handgun, split between 2 TP's
My wife had a duffle bag and a TP with a double and a bolt gun.

AtkinsonIMO, dragging 3 rifles through airports is a pain in the Kazoo, I have done that more than once but never again..
These days I usually just take one rifle like my .450-400 double and make do with it or my .375 or .416 Rem and make do, all of them work really well and I get around better and enjoy my trip more...

BwannaI went last year, Delta from Vegas, SAA to Bulawayo through Joberg with a .458 Lott, and .375 H&H and a 30-06. No problems with requlations or weight (until Delta lost the gun case on the way home between Dulles and Vegas). It ended up in San Francisco - hope the guns weren't sodomized!
18 August 2007, 02:42
Use Enough GunYes the .375 with solids will do just fine for the small stuff. No need for the .22 hornet.

Use Enough GunBwanna: Maybe that wasn't rust on your rifles when you got them back. . . .Did you have them checked for the virus?
18 August 2007, 03:05
L. David KeithAh, but the small calibers are soooo much fun to shoot. Besides, hitting a Dassie at 150 yards would be more than a feat with a .416. I'd take the Hornet and the .416 and positively a shotgun. LDK

Use Enough GunI'm absolutely with you LDK. I have a custom .22-250 that I've dreamed of taking to Africa. Just afraid of having it with me over there and being in the wrong place at the right time with something much bigger and meaner, especially if you were in Zim.
