Shu-Bug jacket?????

I just received an email from our outfitter TBGS regarding our August safari in the southern most part of Tanzania. They recommended that we obtain Shu-Bug jackets because of the heavy mosquito population this year. Does anyone know where we can get these? I check on Cabela's website and couldn't find anything except Buzz Off (and that looked to heavy and hot). Hope someone has had experience with mosquito repellant jackets.

Thanks, D. Nelson

Contact "Harry" (Mims Reed) of this forum. He sells Bug Tamer jackets from his store, Hunters Headquarters.

His website is: www.hunter-hq.com
His email is: hunter-hq@cowtown.net

The bug tamer jackets work very well. We use them here in Florida where we have an excessive mosquito population year round.

One word of caution about them, they do tend to get caught on things very easily. One has to exercise a bit of caution.

Cabela's offers several versions, some very light weight. I would have given $500 for one on my trip to Mozambique. I won't make that mistake again. shame

I only have had positive experience with Shannon's Bug Tamer clothing. I can personally vouch for it's extreme effectiveness in South Carolina Lowcountry swampland (BTW there was serious Malaria problems in this area of the U.S. up until the early 20th century. There are even now just less than half a dozen cases reported here every year. SC skeeters are no joke.)

In super infested mosquito areas, you'll want the bug tamer pants too.

The other stuff I've tried flat doesn't work. Regardless of advertizer claims.

Don't know how Thermacells would work in Africa but they really help here. Good thing to have hunting a blind.

You can buy Permethrin that is the chemical that Buzz-Off clothing is treated with and treat your own clothing. I bought the BuzzOff clothing until I learned that it was treated with this stuff and I could treat whatever I wanted. It's available at REI.com

I don't know if BugTamer is the same or not. I've also heard people rave about the ThermaCell.

Brian

While I am sure that there are other good clothing for bugs I can assure you that Shannon Bug Tamer equipment works. I have been selling it for many years now and mostly to guys going into fly country in Africa. I have never had one returned. I even wear mine turkey and whitetail deer hunting. During spring turkey it keeps the neck biters and ticks off and during deer season it camos whatever I am wearing and kills the glare off my glasses. I have never sprayed mine with anything however I do sell Permanone and that stuff works too. We use it all the time hunting dove etc.
I have Bug Tamer Jackets in stock all the time.
May I be of service?

Permanone is another name for Permethrin. How does the BugTamer stuff work? Is it a treatment or coating or a special type weave of garment?

Brian

Not exactly. Permanone contains a synergistic catalyst that makes it a much more potent bug killer than just permethrin alone.

My daughter owns a Purina feed store here in Colorado. She sells permethrin in a concentrated form that is much much cheaper than you can get it at target, rei, etc. Just mix it with water to the percentage you want in a spray bottle, go out on the back porch and spray your clothing. It is not a repellant as such (although it does have a minor effect), but a bug killer that works extremely well.

Rhino skinz worked great for me in Alaska. They are nice too because they are light weight, and wick away moisture very well.
