In my experience the nyala are biggest in the Natal region of South Africa. That is why I bought all my brood stock for my ranch form the national parks in that region. I mixed several herds to assure good genetic stock. I would be glad to send you a video where you can see up to 30 of them at a time in my alfalfa fields (no hunting zone in the middle of my ranch). I have some decent video of their dominance dancing and a couple of bulls approaching the magical 30" fighting it out. No animals in the video have been shot and the video is all on my ranch. I would guess I have over 10 bulls better than 28â€.
My ranch is 10,000 acres, high fenced, and in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. I charge $300/day and a trophy fee of $2100. You would need to book 7 days to hunt both nyala and bushbuck. I keep them separate due to the problems that they have with being in the same area. It turns off the bushbuck breeding.
I also have good bushbuck.
Feel free to send me a PM if you would like more information.

from what i have been told, Bahati Adventures( who posts on this forum) has a lot of free range nyala and bushbuck in their Moz. concession. i am headed there in Sept , with nyala being one of the animals i want. will post when i return. if you want truly free range animals, your choices will be VERY limited. good luck

Nyala and Bushbuck will as a combination best be hunted in Kwa Zulu Natal. Very few areas have good specimens of both. Historically the best Nyala come from the Hluhluwe and Mkuze areas and Bushbuck from the Umkomaas and Midlands areas. The Umkomaas valley now has a good Nyala population and is producing great bulls, it also has plenty of bushbuck.

The Eastern Cape has both but generally they are smaller than in KZN. Nyala are not endemic to the Cape and are brought in by game farmers.

Try Coenraad Vermaak Safaris or Hunters & Guides

I'd second Scott450 but I'd go with Madabula Safaris. John Abraham was SCI International Hunter of the Year and another of his PHs, Graham Sales was RSA Hunter of the Year. I've hunted with both for dangerous game and plains game and they are terrific. MMP

There's always the Bale Mountains in Ethiopia for Mountain Nyala and Menelik Bushbuck. Libah Safaris, Rocky Valley Safaris, and Ethiopian Rift Valley Safaris all offer these hunts. They are slightly more expensive ( rotflmo) than those in Southern Africa.

Kwa-Zulu-Natal is the best, although I shot a 30" Nyala Bull in the Limpopo area and a 16.5" bushbuck there last July with PH Brad Rolston.

I was asked to post a link to the nyala fighting, so here you go:

The impala in front are also pretty nice. The fence is just to keep my horses out of the alfalfa.

It is my experience that these two species are in natural competition preferring very similar habitats, and thus one tends to displace the other.

I have no experience with situations where one or both are stocked.

We hunt near Hluhluwe in KZN (Zululand Natal) for Nyala, and the world record (33" I believe) was taken not too long ago on an adjacent property. We are confident of getting 28" bulls on this property with a reasonable chance of breaking the 30" barrier. This property produces over 100 Nyala bulls per year, between capture and trophy hunting. I would go so far as to say they are common.

However, bushbuck on this property are not numerous. Reedbuck neither. Red Duiker yes, plenty.

Interestingly, while bushbuck are not common, kudu are becoming more common. There are acacia ridges along the river where impala, warthog, wildebeest, and zebra do well. Some waterbuck too.

That is quite correct Russ, especially for closed and fenced areas. If they live in the open wilderness, they quite happily live alongside each other.

I have been warned by the game managers in South Africa that if a female bushbuck is in heat the nyala male will "tend" her. Although he can not breed her his size keeps the bushbuck males at bay and so you slowly have o progeny coming along from your bushbuck.
For this reason I do have one cross fence on y ranch and it keeps the nyala on one side and the bushbuck on the other. It also keeps the mountain and Burch ell’s zebra apart and allows for botebuck and blesbuck.

I like the Eastern Cape in RSA. Great area for both Nyala and Cape Bushbuck. Plenty of kudu.

I've hunted several times with Gary Phillips of John X Safaris and give them highest marks!

I just returned from Blaauwkrantz in South Africa and they have both Nyala and Bushbuck in good numbers.

I ran into a number of Nyala hunting for bushbuck and Kudu.

You can contact them through Greg Rodriguez at Global Adventure Outfitters, who posts here on AR.
