I good buddy of mine is finally fulfilling his dream of hunting African Plainsgame. Here's the wrinkle. He's planning on taking a single shot rifle with a 30-06 barrel and a Muzzleloader barrel. He is going to the Eastern Cape of South Africa. My understanding is each barrel counts as ONE Gun. He will declare them on the SAPS550. I told him to get the 4457 on it from US customs as well. He knows, he cannot bring bulk powder with him. He knows this must be pre-arranged with his outfitter. Ok, not so tough. What about primers and bullets? And even, speed loaders for the muzzleloader? What if he brings ammo for the 30-06 barrel and none for the muzzle loading barrel? What does he need to have or NOT have coming back? Suddenly, his adventure is looking like a red tape disaster. Anyone have any advice on bringing a switch barrel rifle, with two barrels, one centerfire and one muzzleloading into South Africa?

i use a 2 barrel set for my double all the time, it only counts as 1 gun. only the serial numbered receiver counts. In RSA he'll have no trouble finding stuff, just give the outfitter a bit of time

Ok, so he should register the gun and barrels on his SAPS550 as one gun. (RIGHT?) Then he need only be concerned about powder, primers and bullets being purchased ahead of time by the PH and waiting for him? This is what I suppose he must do.

yes - 1 gun w/2 bbls. powder and caps might give him trouble with the airlines, but not so the bullets. there's quite a few guys that take ML's hunting over there - don't forget the US customs forms too

If you are going to do this I would strongly recommend you have the receiver/barrels preapproved with a service such as Air2000. You may be completely within the law but the SAPS officer checking you in may not understand that. Don't confuse them. When I proposed taking an extra Encore barrel on a past RSA trip, I was told, no problem as long as I put down the serial number of the extra barrel. Of course, in the U.S.A., barrels don't have serial numbers. In addition, my understanding is that in the RSA each barrel DOES count as a separate firearm. I plan to take a Blaser on an upcoming trip to the RSA. Air2000 told me to put the receiver serial number on one line and, since the barrel has its own serial number, to record that on a separate line on the SAPS form.

I had the same understanding so it seems I am not alone in my confusion here. My friend is also taking an Encore. I will certainly suggest he get in touch with Air2000.
