I know this has been discussed but I couldn't find anything in the search that would answer my basic question.

I am going to take a 375 HH for my Buff hunt. I am not a handloader. What cartridge sould I use? Should I use an a-frame backed up by solid?

I will also be using a 300WSM for plains game.

bullsprig,
That is how I load my .375H&H when hunting buff; 300gr. A-Frame, followed by 300gr. solids.

Remington Safari Grade .375H&H ammo uses Swift A-Frames.

George is right on. A-Frames or Federal loaded Trophy Bonded Bear Claws (TBBCs)are the answer.

For your second comment on the 300 WSM for plains game:

Great choice. Not only because that is what I used on my plains game hunt in RSA last year Smilerbut also because it offers the velocity and energy between two other well-established plains game cartridges: The 30-06 and the 300 Win mag. In fact, I used 180gr. TBBCs out of my 300 WSM that probably exceeded 300 win mag factory ammo vel. at about 3035fps (24" barel).

Again, use tough bullets- TBBCs, A-frames for the 300 WSM in 165-200gr. weights.

BTW, keep in mind that if you loose your 300 WSM ammo, you won't likely find any in Buff country. On the other hand, a .375 H&H will amply suffice for most plains game you will likely encounter, unless shots are at extreme range (which is very unlikely anyways).

Practice, practice, practice from field positions is key.

George, Thanks. Is it one of the a-frames and two solids? I know that is simple but I am a rook.

I will not answer for George, but from what I know, it is usually 1 soft followed by the remainder of the magazine with solids.

BTW, you might consider having some gunsmithing work to increase the magazine capacity to 4 rounds from three (

Just buy some Rem. 300 gr. A-Frames. You do not need solids for buffalo, regardless of the persistence of rumors to the contrary.

I have had great luck with Swift A-Frames in my .375 H&H. The cheapest place I have found them is Sportsmansguide

It's listed as the Remington Safari Grade.

It is sometimes difficult to find the Federal Trophy Bonded Sledgehammer Solids. So when you do, buy all that you will need.

Talk to your PH about what mix of solids and softs he wants you to use. If your hunting in a herd, he may want you to use only softs.

Regards,

Terry

There's a lot of varying opinions posted here by experienced hunters and PHs as well and some agree that the soft should be followed by solids.....some agree with Will

Personally I like Will's attitude here because one bullet is easier to handle than two and the Swift A-Frame is a better thing to throw at an Eland if need be. But from my own experience the A-Frame will also act much like a solid in that it seems to stay intact for excellent penetration and that's the reason for the solid.

This is a totally different ballgame than shooting 300 grain Sierra boat tails at the buff. A very fine bullet but we're lucky to live in a day when far far superior bullets are available.
I'm planning a buff hunt as well and the decision for me is to use swifts or Northforks. I'll only use solids if my PH insists on it.
