nice trophy animal; but where & how on God's green earth did anybody ever come up with the sobriquet "Poor Man's Buffalo"? Cape Buffalo kill people when the mood strikes them regards, Rich DRSS Buffalo Killer

I think you have been reading too many books. Jason "You're not hard-core, unless you live hard-core." _______________________ Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt. Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure. -Jason Brown

Do not take the Blue Wildebeest for granted. I know of at least 2 experienced PH's that was hospitalized after they were charged by a Blue Wildebeest Bull. And I know of quite a few close encounters after they were wounded. But the reference to Poor Man's Buffalo comes from their "buffalo shaped horns with bosses" as well as their tenacity to life. No offense, and Wildebeest are pretty neat to hunt for. One of them is on my bucket list. But; try as I will, I just cannot visualize Robert Ruark saying "Wildebeest, they simply look at you as if you owe them money...". Regards, Rich DRSS

Squeeze and New Guy, thanks for the enhanced photos. As to Rich' question regarding where the phrase "Poor man's Buffalo" comes from I guess Gerhard's explanation is the most accurate... Their horns being similarly shaped to that of Cape Buffalo and the fact that one can hunt more than 10 BWB for the price of one Cape Buffalo probably earned them the nickname of Poor man's Buff.
