Lions kill man in game reserve 20/04/2007 16:00 - (SA) Pretoria - A man has died after he apparently got out of his car in the Krugersdorp Game Reserve and was attacked by lions. Arriving paramedics found a parked vehicle, with the driver's door still open. Reports from the scene indicate that for some reason the man stopped his vehicle and climbed out and it is unclear whether the man knew the lions were in the vicinity or not. He was attacked by a small pride of lions and pulled in amongst the trees. Game rangers on the scene were unable to get the lions away for some time and as it was too dangerous to approach, it took some time before the body could be reached. By this stage the man's wife and children had been contacted, they were understandably extremely traumatised by the news, as were staff from the game reserve. Netcare 911 paramedics and counsellors were on scene with the family to offer any assistance and support. The man's death could be confirmed at 14:30 when game rangers and police had managed to clear the lions from the area. Five lions were reportedly involved in the incident, it is unclear at this stage what officials will decide to do about them. Lions kill reserve owner April 20 2007 at 05:50PM by Omphitlhetse Vivian Mooki Johannesburg - The man mauled to death by a pride of lions at the Krugersdorp Game Reserve on the West Rand on Friday is the owner of the reserve, police said. Captain Joseph Mogoai identified the victim as Dirk Brink, 58. Brink died after the lions attacked him shortly after 12.30pm. Police were baffled by the incident. "No one can explain what happened and we are investigating an inquest," Mogoai said. Paramedics called to the scene had to watch as Brink was being mauled by the lions because "it was extremely dangerous for them to approach", Netcare 911 spokesman Mark Stokoe said. "Paramedics could not attend to him immediately and they had to wait for game rangers and police to chase the lions away." He said it took a "significant amount of time" for the rangers and police to chase the lions away, and when they did, Brink was already dead. "The attack was very bad." "The door to his car was open when we got there and it appears the lions dragged him to the bushes before attacking him." The game reserve refused to comment. An employee at the reserve who identified herself as Sunet said: "We don't have comment," before slamming down the phone.
