Damn... I hit the Post Reply button too early. Wink

I remember once in Romania that I've been sent alone in the wood with the chariot driver able only to speak a mix of russian, moldavian and romenian. He was not too clever, IMHO Big Grin . Normally there was a gamekeeper, but he had to do his own business and he left me with the horse driver. OH yes he explained me in the mixed language everything, and for him it was enough

I had to hunt a female of fallow deer, 1, only one. Instead to make me have some fun, he brought me immediately in the best area, where the deers were "piled up" all together. 4 minutes later and 500 meters of road I shot the first one. The horse driver told me to get back but I persuaded him to continue. To make it short I decided to get back after two hours and 5 deers well chosed.

After a long tragic and furious and angry scene, he realized, while he was bringing me at the hunting house that he was not with me during that two hours!!! Ceausescu era was finish, but its effects were still present. he pleased me to tell to everyone that he had done his duty.
I said ok. At the end I told the facts to the resort boss, I put a good word for the gamekeeper, left a good tip and closed the issue,
the boss thanked me, told me that that part of resort was poor of hares, and that he had to send some to compensate the deers hunted by me, that they have to enjoy the deers in a big lunch all together, drinking a lot to my health.

The same has been often done to solve the missing shots issues.

He mentioned one preserve that has a game scout along with the client and PH. The game scout marks down any missed shots along with game taken. At the time the safari is settled with the landowner and PH, the PH is charged R200 ($35.00 us) for each missed shot.
This is done to supposedly cut down on taking careless shots and excessive shooting.

I know it happens, as I've heard of it. I still think it is bullshit and any Outfitter worth his salt will not hunt on land where this is enforced. I have wondered if outfitters and PH's know how much power they have, and start boycotting some of these money chasing landowners, they will be surprised with what they can achieve.

I'm sorry, this is not on, there are other ways to make sure there are no excessive shooting. There is no excuse for this.

One of the two outfitters I saw that was charging for missed shots is Leeukop Safaris. Per the Leeukop website they do not charge for 1 miss or repeat shot but do charge $10 for additional missed or repeat shots.

http://www.leeukopsafaris.co.za/

The other outfitter that I do not recall was charging something like $25 for every missed shot, saying the ph had done his job.

I just shortened my max range to 50 yards. If it were me I would make the PH work his ass off.

How the hell can one even THINK of hunting with an outfitter who calls a round of ammo BULLET?

Let alone charges 15% of the trophy fee for a missed shot.

Is that some sort of British thing? I have a friend that probably shoots ten thousand shotgun cartridges every year and he often calls those bullets. He is in the gun trade and does know the difference.

Sorry, what I meant to say was that they sell the meat from hunting trips to underprivileged communities at a "reduced" cost. Put that in context with "bullets" at $5 a whack and missed shot fees at 15% per trophy fee. bewildered

How about this deal?
I agree to pay DOUBLE the trophy fee for every shot I miss. But the landowner let's me have all animals I kill with one shot for free?

In our deer camp the penalty for missing is that it is your turn to do the dishes-- and remains so until someone else misses.

I would love to see this go down....

Engage the outfitter into correspondence with a firm qoute. Just as he thinks he bagged the hunt, you make him this offer.......No one will of course take you up on it Saeed, or change there terms. Might just be a hell of a lot of fun to see the reply.

Pitty, Leeukop is one of the better hunting places in South Africa. Did not know they charged for missed shots.......
