Rhino darting - self defense question

I am watching the TIA episode where they are trying to dart a Rhino to complete the hunter’s Big Five. How much trouble (political, paper work, legal) would it cause if the PH has to shoot one in self defense? I would guess that it would be really helpful if it was on film but what if it wasn’t? Just curious if it has happened?

These acts are done on private property.

I am guessing that the owners have insurance, and can claim from them.

I have no idea what the costs are, nor do I have any wish to participate in one.

I know some members here have done it, may be they can enlighten us.

My wife has done it. We were required to purchase insurance for this eventuality (or if the animal didn't wake up). Wasn't expensive and the experience was surprisingly fun.

I did one of these hunts in 2006 as well. The rancher had insurance on the event. He also said under no circumstances would he be shooting the animal!! LOL. Really never any reason to have anyway. There was always plenty of room between us and the animal to avoid any sticky situations.

The real enjoyable part was after the shot. My wife and I joined in with the veterinary team to get the rhino off its feet, as well as efforts to keep it calm and cool while the vet did his research work. I got to administer the injection to wake it up and take cover!

The "hunt" was uneventful. The experience was cool.

I asked the question I the Save about what do we do regarding a rhino charge.

The PH’s glib response was “I’d let it kill me”

More seriously, he said, try and turn it with a leg shot, but that you would be spending time as a guest of Mr. Mugabe. His comment was that I was not to shoot even if he got trampled, that he would keep it from killing me, but that he would let the game scout do anything else.

The game scout said that the rhino would not be shot by him or me... and the PH would do “life” in prison.

That’s with a wild black rhino.

White rhino- in SA where they sell dart hunts- they have insurance and folks from parks along. I went to shoot one with a rifle, and everyone was pretty low stress about that- if we had to shoot, that was my rhino... darting, well, the campfire tales were interesting.

White rhino aren’t very aggressive comparatively. The biggest issue with darting them is doing it in the right place so they can do whatever they need to.

Black rhino, different game altogether.

Walter wounded a wildebeest in South Africa.

He went and stood in the middle of a bunch of rhinos.

The PH said "don't hit any of the rhino. It will be a very expensive mistake!"

I said "don't worry, I will shoot it, and I won't kill any of your pets!"

Oh...., Shit...

I hate reading that sort of thing, poor buggers both !

When I was in Zim many years back & a Black Rhino came Huffing & Chuffing pass us in the thick bush, I asked the PH I was hunting with could we shoot the Rhino if he charged us, his reply was even if he came charging us with two of the Trackers on his horns & about to gore me he would still not want to shoot as time would be spent in jail !

I did mine in 2008. I did it on Unico Safaris concession in SA. That company was owned by Christo Kaiser (sp).

Christo was killed by an Elephant one year earlier in the exact same location in Botswana as I killed my Elephant (NG41) same date, one year earlier.

Anyway, I was thinking it was gonna be lame. It was exciting and much more difficult than a rifle hunt would have been. I coulda' smoked him many times prior to putting a dart in him.

Unico cheaped out on a chopper and I'm sure the insurance as well. The PH didn't want to do it because he didn't want to be put into a spot where he would have to shoot it.

The vet was the very same guy that was tied up with Dawie Groenwald (sp).

The whole thing was fun but shady AF. It was 6,000.

They told me they only dart them once a year. However, I saw my Rhino on their website in a whole bunch of pictures. Also saw him dead with a Spaniard posing with him.

Would like to do a Black Rhino Dart Hunt as I don't really want to kill a Rhino, I think they are a cooler looking species & dangerous potential killing machines !

Something I don't think the White Rhino is !

Has the White Rhino killed many people on purpose ?

In the episode the White Rhino was hanging out with a Black Rhino which made it a little dicey

MHO, you picked the fight. You don't get to kill the rhino under any circumstances, but he gets to kill you. There's a lot less of them than you. So if you do one of these things, don't screw it up. I'd require that it be done with no backup rifles. Just like I've always said canned lions should be done with shields and spears and no backup. Man up or go home. I'd rather see the go home option with rhinos.

Darted a rhino in SA about 10 years ago. It was a lot more exciting and interesting than I thought it would be. Well worth it.

It is not on my radar to do one of these as there are more hints I want to do. I was just wondering with how heavily protected they are if it goes wrong you are super screwed.
