On my 416 Ruger I have the standard integral V sight that as most of you know it's pretty sturdy. I did replace the frot sight with a 3/32" bead. Shoots pretty much dead on at 50 yards. I have to echo Allen's comments on the skeletonized EAW rear sight however. I had a chance to look through it and it is by far, the most user-friendly sight I've ever looked through. jorge

On my Model 70 Super Express .458 Win. Mag., I have a milled-steel rear sight from Jim Wisner, plus a machined barrel-band front sight from Wisner. The rear sight is of the exact same design as the pre-64 Model 70 African, and features a fixed, standing, shallow "V" single blade. The front sight features a 3/32" white bead. These sights are screwed and soldered to the barrel. They don't move.

My Echols-built custom Model 70 in .375 H&H features a milled-steel island rear base with a skeletonized, fixed milled-steel blade from EAW. This sight is adjustable for windage-only. The ramped front sight is also from EAW, and features a fiber-optic bead, and this sight is adjustable for elevation. Of all the open sights I've ever used, this is the most effective setup of them all. The skeletonized rear blade doens't cover or obscure the target, and the fiber-optic front bead shows up well under all light conditions. Again, these sights are screwed and soldered to the barrel, are tough and unmoving and will be there forever.

Hi there
I use a pre64 m70 converted to 450Watts for backup. For many years I used a shallow v and gold bead front sight, which works fine for close range backup.Having been in the military I work well with peepsights,so I had my gunsmith make up a rear base for a Lynx QD ring set which incorporates a built in rigid large aperture peep.So now I can use my 1.75-6E Leupold or the peep.I liked it so much I did the same to my Classic m70 .375,only this rear base has a flip up peep and still uses the standard flip up rear blade thats been filed into a shallow V.I use the same scope and rings on both rifles, have to change the zero though.

N.E.C.G. makes a rear sight that is a solid single leaf. It replaces the stock sight and uses the existing island. I talked to one of their 'sight gurus. who sold this to me. He said that he had made it for his.70. I use their front adj. sight with a 3/32 bead.

They make a great product and will work with you to get what you want. They are, at some times, slow about getting around to it though.

I use Waren QD 30mm rings with a Swarovski 1.5X6 42mm scope. Base mounting holes drilled and tapped out to 8X40 on this .375 H&H

Between the sights and scope unit, it has been an unbeatable combo.

All the best,

Sam

I like the NECG shallow V sets up and have them on most of my rifles....I also love that old Winchester screw gizzie shallow V that Winchester had on some of the old pre 64 M-70s....

I believe the receiver or peep sight combined with a NECG Sourdough type post is the best sight set up for a DGR. I also like the 3/32 bead of ivory or gold and the new generation light gathering beads are nice also.....

Richard Lemmer,
I gave Pierre the pair of gloves that I promised you, but knowing him, he may try and put one over on you, so call him out about them.....

For those who have been on safari what is your setup for open sights. Some have mentioned NECG, some peep. What have you used successfully. What exact model and part numbers are you using. (Would also be interested in your scope mount/ring setup as well). I'm primarily interested in the M70, but if you've found a good setup for your gun,
feel free to share your congiguration.
