Ok folks, pleae bear with me, but you can gather from my other posts that I'm a bit unhinged with 20 days to go Smiler. Anyhow, my best frind is coming with me on his first buffalo hunt and he asked me "what are the odds on actually taking a buffalo?" and all I could say was 100% on at least getting a shot at one. Am I overly optimistic? I don't think so as I never heard of ANYBODY coming home empty handed unless by choice or by the unfortunate happenstance of a wounded one getting away. Thoughts? jorge

Jorge,

With the PH you are hunting with (John Sharp) and the area (Dande North), 1000% guarantee that your friend will get a shot at a buffalo.

Hell, I could be the PH and get him a shot at a buffalo. Big Grin The problem will be getting him to pass on the first few and wait for a big one. I'd pay good money to be there when he gets up close to his first buffalo. I'll bet you won't be able to shut him up. He'll start over sundowners and talk all the way through dinner. Wink

Regards,

Terry

After talking through dinner, the flight home, he will tell everyone all about it! The only known therapy is a return trip. We must suffer through many before we have a chance of being cured!

Dande North has fantastic numbers of buffalo. I wouldn't be surprised if he sees more bulls on his first day then he would see in the Selous in a week! I'm envious!

465H,
Those are bold words, I have seen as many as perhaps a thousand Buffalo at one sighting in the Selous, I sat on a high point a few years ago and observed a sea of buffalo in a 20 square mile vuga of high grass....Many times I have seen in excess of 300 per day, and sometimes only 50....

I have seen a lot of Buffalo in Dande, but not like in the Selous or even the Mayowasi if everything was right....

Ray with all due respect to your vast experience my point was based on the fact that the Selous is a huge are and not all portions at all times of the year hold large numbers of buff. The Dande North area is relatively small and buffs appear to be there at all seasons of the year. Also Dande is thick brachestegia woodlands where visibility is very limited so most buff you see are in rifle range. There is no place at least that I know of where you can see 20 sq. miles of grass at Dande. On my trip there we saw at least 3 herds that we estimated contained over 700 buff. I don't think we we had a day that we didn't see at least 50. Usually from 4 to 10 herds. That is why I couched my statement with "It wouldn't surprise me" rather then saying it as a fact. Either way I think we can agree that you would have to be blind not be able to get a buff in 7 days at Dande or in the Selous.

Jorge,

I agree with Ray on 100% on buff. There are lots of buff in the places where you usually hunt them, and given your area and outfitter you and your pard will be fine.
