Are there any good magazines on hunting in Africa? I'm not interested in reloading and rifles, etc., but I enjoy good hunting tales. If so how can I get a subscription?

For clarification are "The African Sporting Gazette", "African Shooting Gazette" and "Africian Hunting Gazette" all different mags?
I didn't realize there were so many. If you could only choose one what would it be?

Any ideas where to get subscription info?

I do get SCI Safari and love it.

Thanks for your help.

"Sporting Classics" and "Under Wild Skies" are about the best if you ask me. Of course I'm a little biased as I write for them sometimes (freelance). But for my money they're the best.

elkfitter,

I haven't heard of the hunting gazette or shooting gazette, but the Sporting Gazette is a great magazine, in my opinion. Like Gayne, I am also biased as I sometimes write for them.

Try African Hunter, printed in Zim by good folks Anthony Williams and Don Heath and also a very different culture, HATARI TIMES, produced independently by German gunmaker living in Belgium, Harald Wolf...some on guns but mostly down to earth real African Hunting, generally each issue bieng focused on one Country with an Australian issue every couple of years. Contact Harald at mail@hataritimes.com, and contact Ant Williams/Don Heath at fishunt@zol.co.zw

+1 on African Hunter. I like that one alot. It helps that many of the writers are guys from this website.

One of the best parts is reading writers like Don Heath who run the testing for Zimbabwe's PH qualifications among other things.

African Outfitter, as well also a very good mag that is starting to come trough in the US.

JudgeG, I think features in the new one with a story in it. As well as my Part 2 of my Angola trip. Bi-Monthly magazine.

February/March issue link.

Frederik:

Gee! That's the first I've heard of a story being published. I went to the website, but didn't see anything listed in the current issue. What is the story about?

I assume (with my permission... I'm easy) a PH got it published. Each trip, I usually write something which I send it to the PH for whatever use they may wish (usually just on their websites), but I guess African Outfitter picked one up?

Could you give me any details. I'd like to get a copy and keep it with the other articles I've had published. The website doesn't refer to it?

JudgeG ... just counting time 'til I am again finding balm in Gilead chilled out somewhere in the Selous.

Judge,

It the story with you and Pierre I recall and the buffalo that was taken infront of you with the lions. (It was you that wrote that story isnt it I read it on AR)

Some of Pierre's trophy photos is also featuring in the mag. The mag will be on the shelves next week.

One of the great things about African Hunter is, they tell it like they see it. If they test a piece of equipment and it's a POC they tell you that in writing. African Sporting Gazette is very good as is "Magnum" which is published in S. Africa and contains articles by Peter Flack and Gregor Woods, both of whom have adeep knowledge and love for africa and a common sense way of expressing it.

As I understand it, Magnum is angled towards RSA and African Hunter is towards Zim. Keep that in mind as it does influence the articles.

I would say African Sporting Gazette and add Big Game Adventures. BGA is alot like Safari. It's a little bit of every thing, but a lot of Africa.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Brett,

BGA is out of print and that is a good thing. Poorly run and the gentleman that ran it was a little disingenious at times.

I didn't realize that BGA was out of business. I remember some of their early issues being decent and different than average.

This was batted on about in another thread and Ray O. was appropriately skewered.
