Did anyone happen to see the documentary " Adventure Lovers ", the story of film makers Martin and Osa Johnson, on PBS last night. I must say it was well done and there were many scenes of the original film footage of hunting in Africa. Including Osa Johnson drilling a charging rhino and a traditional tribal lion hunt.

I did a little searching and found where to buy their films on VHS.

The Martin and Osa Johnson Safari Museum

Now if I can only find a hat like Osa's.

I missed it and am really pissed about it. I have read all her books. They are a look into a past that is almost like a dream.

Darn! I wish I'd known that that was going to be on. The Johnsons were a really interesting pair doing interesting things in interesting places. Does anyone know if PBS plans a repeat?

One of my Safari partners has seen this before and read about them. He said that Martin would try to get the animals to charge so that they could get it on film. I'm not stating this as factual knowledge but it seems reasonable once you get the full story. She was reportedly an outstanding shot and had nerves of steel. My kinda woman. [Big Grin]

Thanks for the link for the film. I will get it ordered.

Sam,
That's exactly what happened with her and the rhino, she approached them and looked back at the camera smiling. One charged and she dropped him with a double rifle with one shot. Then turned around and smiled. Amazing footage and you're right, that woman had absolute nerves of steel.
In the tribal lion hunt you see a couple guys get nailed by the lion after they spear him. Incredible footage.
If you look at that link you'll see where it says there's 140 miles of film footage the Johnsons shot in the archives. It would be really interesting to just sit and watch all that raw footage. All that footage of original Africa and Africans just sitting there.

I caught the last half of it-just turned it on as she dropped the charging rhino.Darn good shooting, espicaly considering that the double turned her nearly half way around.

Did anyone notice all the HUGE cape buff that Eastman and the Johnson's killed with the 405 Winchester and lived to tell about it?Don't tell 500grains! [Big Grin] [Wink] [Razz] [Big Grin]

I sure would not have missed that if I'd known about it! Wonder if they plan a rerun? What a fascinating couple.

Well, apparently not all PBS stations are going to air this show. [Confused] I searched www.pbs.org and found that some stations are going to air it and some aren't. My local PBS station, in Houston, is NOT going to show it. At least I couldn't find it in the program listings.

I did see the show listed for KEET/Channel 13 in Eureka, California. (I just randomly picked that station. It was the first one I found that had the show listed.) Here's the description from their listing:

Adventure Lovers:
Filmmakers Martin and Osa Johnson embarked on many adventures, including a foray into the world of South Sea cannibals.
Recent and upcoming airings: 8/18 8:00pm, 8/19 11:30am, 8/24 6:00pm

As they say, check your local listings!

If anyone happens to catch this show again, would you please see if there is an 800 phone number given at the end of the show for ordering a tape and then post the number here? I'd appreciate it. I went to the company's web site, that produced the show (http://www.aptonline.org/), and information there indicated that the show was NOT available on home video. I also checked the PBS online store and it wasn't listed there. However, you never know. They might give out a number at the end of the show.

Thanks,
-Bob F.
