I would use it on light to medium size plains game and Leopard. On anything big and tough (such as zebra, sable, and eland) I would move up to 200 grain Barnes X loaded to about 2300 in your 30-06.

My favorite load for non dangerous/plains game is my 300 Win mag loaded with 200 grain Barnes X @ 2650. I would use it on anything on the dark continent except Buffalo, Elephant, and Rino.

I've found that 180 gr 30-06 works very well on plains game. Usually I use bearclaws, but I see no reason why fail safes wouldn't work.
On the other hand, if you are going to spend the money to go to Africa why skimp on ammo?

180 gr Failsafe bullets should be about perfect for anything you care to shoot with your 30-06.

Anyone who claims the 30-06 is ineffective has either not tried one, or is unwittingly commenting on their own marksmanship

One batch of 180 FS's I had didn't open very well. The 165's on the other hand did. From what I'm seeing I think the Barnes TSX's are a better bet.

Never had a problem getting two holes in plains game with a 180gr Fail Safe shot from my 300Win mag. I'd think the same bullet from an '06 would do nearly as well.

I shoot a .300 WSM and I shot a 2,000 lb. Eland Bull 2 years ago with the 180 gr. FailSafe bullets. Flawless performance! I talked to several people who didn't think it was enough, but believe me, it put him on the ground. GREAT bullets!

ABF, anything but Failsafes.

Yes they are capable of making two holes, each exactly the same diameter.

I'd prefer 100% shock to the animal than an underperforming bullet.

That's not been my experience. Exit holes have always been at least 50% larger than entrance holes.

Failsafes need to be pushed as fast as possible, they work much better at magnum velocities of 2900 FPS plus.

Ray-
I would agree that these bullets like speed. However, there was also a "softer" version designed to impact at '06 velocities, and these were/are used in the factory ammo.
When these were all new and just being brought to market there were several boxes of 30/06 ammo loaded with the 180gr bullet that made their way to Tanzania. Given a "field test" by several PHs there, all of them reported very good results. I have also fired a few of these at game and found them to behave pretty much like the 300mag version.
