Any particular thoughts in the best type of express sight? I am finally moving forward on this custom .404. I want to put Q/D rings and have the iron sight option. Right now I am looking at the folding leaf style available from Mauser.

I would stay away from folding sights, they have the nasty habit of being folded down when you need it up. on a 404 you are really not shooting at any long distances which would require additional sigh elevation. pick a good set with a highly visable front that your eyes pick up on readily. if you eyes are anything like my aging ones the fiber optics really stand out

Butch, good point, I didn't think of that.

I'll agree w/ bc, you want astout, reliable setup. My M70 has a single fixed blade on a 1/4 rib w/ a NECG flipup front "night sight". Looks very classy & works perfectly.

Carmello, There are two things I would personally consider, one is what I am going to have on my 458 and that is the pre-64 458 Winchester site. This one is windage and elevation adjustable and is standing, not folding. Jim Wisner makes an improved version of it (the original I think had two pitches on the screw that moves the blade and his is one pitch with large diameter if I remember right). I don't like the idea of having to file the blade for load adjustment. The other thing I would consider on the rear sight is having Jim make me one of those but put the fiber optic window looking rear blade that NECG makes in it instead of the standard one. I had an original pre-64 sight but donated it to a project I am having done right now so will have to get another one from Jim when I restart my project. Red

I would opt for one standing sight and sight it in at 1" high at 50 yards, it will be about the same at 100 and probably on at 150 and 5" low at 200, but all this you need to check out and learn the trajectory of YOUR rifle.... To me a better option is purchase a one standing and one down sight and cut the one standing off so that you have only one sight that is down but will flip up....then use the Brockman pop up peep on the Talley base. or a Talley slide on peep in conjunction with your Scope... That way you have two sets of irons to back up your scope..the flip down sight will not interfere with the peeps sight picture, and is nothing more than a backup sight for the peep and the scope........ Another very fast and accurate sight is the standing V sight used with a NECG partridge square post, but sight in the gun where the post is taken flush with the flat top of the V, such as the sight picture one takes with a pistol...This method is as fast as a peep or any sight and is very accurate indeed, it was a method used by the Texas Rangers in the thick South Texas bush country and when shooting from the back of a horse, and it really works..I have several guns set up in this manner...It sounds awkard, but once tried most really like it.......

Quote: Why not just install express sights on your 45-70 and skip the .404?

I find that I need the "300 yards" flip-up leaf on my .416 CZ to get a 50 meter zero, with my current load (still developing, currently at 90 grs powder...forgot the powder ID...for 2300 fps, 400 grs Nosler). Apart from giving me some flexibility now, and with future load development I don't really see the advantage of having three leaves. I can't seen myself using the rifle with open sight beyond 100 yards anyway. Who sells replacement front sights for the CZ, I don't see them on the CZ-USA site. Or do I need to replace the whole front sight to a brand that *has* a variety of sights? I like the idea of a peep sight on a base...I assume there are both ghost ring, and finer rings available for this? Good thing it's almost christmas... Frans
