I posted a story about an unprovoked charge a while back entitled 'Back in the Thick of it'. I think a few people enjoyed it and there was a request for a photo of the bull's infected scrotum, which was the reason for the charge. Here is the picture. I'm sure you'd agree that it would send any guy over the edge. The second photo shows where the gamescout's AK47 rounds raked the bull. That also couldn't have done much to improve its mood. I think the story is now on page 2 or 3, if you haven't read it. Eyes on the trail fellas! [URL= ][IMG] [URL= ][IMG]

David, What a hunt. Just read your report. The bullet hole looks like the profile of a lead core (rather than steel core which is slightly boat tail), 123 grain 7.62 x 39 bullet that hit perfectly sideways. Did your game guard shoot a bunch of times at the buff and one of these bullets hit some tree limbs as he ran away from the sand river? I also see that your client Ed has a 2 x 7 scope on his .416. Did he have any comment about his field of view after everyone had time to calm down? Great photos and story. Andy

Andy Thanks for the compliment. I have no idea what ammo the scout was using, was just amazed that he hit the buffalo at all! Bit low though. He fired about 8 shots and hit it 3 times. Very observant regarding the scope. That is Tim's rifle though, not Ed's. Tim did very well with that rifle when the cow charged us a couple days prior to Ed and Rich's debacle with the bull. He shot it 3 times in the chest at close range and bowled it over. Each time it tried to pick up momentum, Tim buried another round in the same spot. There were two PH's present and neither of them fired a shot. The cow dropped 8 yards from Tim and all of his shots were true, so the scope did just fine.

Utterly facinating story, thank you. I am truly enjoying the quality of your posts. By the way David do you run across A. J. Van Heerden at all in your travels? Hunted with him in the Chewore North back in 1991. If so please send him another David's regards. Had him shoot pheasant's in New York before a SCI convention one year... much fun. 308Sako Thank you Sir, you are too kind. I haven't bumped into AJ for a long time, but I used to work for him in Chewore South, back in 1994/95. I have a story posted here called 'Witchdoctors, Vadomas and Elephant Bulls'(page 2), which is from that period. At the bottom of the story can be seen a couple of photos of me with elepant tusks from Chewore '94. The first is of the pick-up tusks from the story, and the second pair (84/82 pounds) were taken by one of AJ's clients in Chewore. Another of his clients took a 91 pounder that year. AJ is a great elephant hunter.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but if the memories are warm to you I am sure you understand. We saw many Elephants in the Chewore North that May, and A. J. would try very hard to get me interested in them! He had I think his Dad's .577 along. It was such a marvelous and enchanted time. The big Bull I think was Al Kuntz's (?) probably spelled that wrong, sorry Sir. I spoke with A. J. that January following at SCI and he told me the story, and the luck that went into it. Thank you for the response. Member NRA, SCI- Life #358 28+ years now! DRSS, double owner-shooter since 1983, O/U .30-06 Browning Continental set.

308Sako I understand your feelings 100%. Chewore is a wondrous place that is able to stir the emotions of most everyone. The epitome of big game country, so unspoilt and so vast. Elephant and lions; fossilized forest and dinosaur tracks; crudely carved out river valleys flanked by rugged sandstone cliffs; mighty mountains, rolling hills, impregnable jesse, giant mopani forests.....Chewore is all of this and so much more. But what I associate Chewore with more than anything else is buffalo. Chewore is the land of the buffalo, nothing more need be said. The guy who took the 91 pounder was Tom Kuntz, was it not?

Yes, Tom, at least after a day I was able to edit in a proper Family name! Rather than blame booze, or faulty memory which it sometimes is (one or the other) I simply plead ignorance and save the jury it's time! Member NRA, SCI- Life #358 28+ years now!
