I Have been introduced to the new Woodleigh mono's the Hydrostaticly stabilized ones and i was wondering if anyone is willing to put up their views on this new bullet and if anyone has used them on any of the big game here especially buffalo and elephant im interested to know what this bullet does in .458 because i have a .458 ruger M77 made in 1973. a friend of mine crono'ed one of these in a .375 H&H and got 2500ft per second . I have also been trying to source them here in zim and it is nothing short of a problem. Alsoi have a Brno Model 1 .22 LR and does anyone know of a website i can go to and download the owners manual for it as i think it will be an interesting bit of reading.

I'm having a Custom M98 458Win made up at present and have set it up with Woodleighs standard 480grn bullets but I also tried to set the new 450grn Hydros. The problem is, the Gun Smith could not get them to feed, in fact I had trouble to hand feed them in. The Smith said he could get them to work but did say there could be a risk of taking to much metal of the ramps thus increasing the chance of the rounds jumping right out on fast feeding. I scraped that idea right there.
It might only be a problem with this round with this action though.

That is very interesting i will deffinately look into that because i know of other the other calibers eg .308 and .375 H&H and as far as i know they were feeding fine i think the only way i will find out is if i load one and see how it feeds. Do you know of anyone who has used them on any big game and how they performed ?

A mate culled some Aus Buffalo with them in 375 and found no feeding problems.
AR's "fatboy404" uses them in 9.3 and 404 with no feeding problems in 404. I'm sure he will join in and explain his extensive experiences with them. tu2

Dear Zimreloader,

Hunt with Woodleigh hydrostatically stabilised mono solids

This story is of my elephant and hippo hunt with these new projectiles last year with Buzz Charlton's team (Richie Shultz PH).
The story contains some reloading details, they can be a fiddle to get right but are worth the effort.

Australia
I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of drought and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror
The wide brown land for me!

Zimreloader,
I have some 450grn 458 bullets that you can try if that's the weight your after.
Which part of Zim are you from. I can get one of my mates to bring them home (Bul) at the end of the season for you.

Those are the exact ones i have been trying to find that are giving me a headache. I would greatly appreciate if you could send me over some as i will reload them myself and use them for PAC (Problem Animal Control) and hopefully for some other hunts. I am based now in Hwange/ victoria falls but my family live in Harare and i got friends in Bulawayo aswell so it should not be a problem for me to pick them up. How many are you willing to send over ?

Zimreloader,

Last year I took two tuskless cows with the Woodleigh Hydro in 470 caliber. On frontal head shots I got the same amount of total penetration as I did with with North Fork FN solids. What was different was the size of the holes thru the head bones. With the normal RN or FN I would see holes of caliber or slightly larger in size. With the Hydro's I saw holes over one inch in diameter. They appear to cause massive bone damage. I like them a lot for this reason.

That is some serious damage did you take pictures of the damage those Hydros did im interested to see. Another member on here used those Hydros when hunting buff and shot through a thick branch and 2 other small ones and it still went pretty much right through the buff i really have got to get some of these Hydros

Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures, I'm bad! Check with George Hallamore in Zim. He was my PH and can verify the size of the holes in the skull.

Really depends on your rifle. My Dakota 76 in 450 Dakota loads them(480gr) without issue in both slow and fast cycling.

Hello,

The BRNO Model 1 isn't listed there, but the most complete list I've seen for firearms manuals is http://stevespages.com/page7b.htm and everyone should have this reference site.

Best,

ZR,
I've got 8 pieces that you can have ( enough to try out).
What powder are you using?
Adam.
