Elephant kills girl in East

AN elephant in Mambwe district in Eastern Province has trampled to death a 14-year-old girl.
Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) spokesperson Maureen Mwape who confirmed the death identified the girl as Violet Zulu, of Kasamanda area of Chief Msoro’s area.
Violet was killed as she was cycling to the clinic around 11:00 hours and one of the elephants became agitated and charged at her killing her instantly.
The community members tried in vain to chase the elephants by throwing stones, beating drums and using dogs.
In the process, one of the dogs was also killed after biting a calf.
The community was warned to avoid provoking the elephants.
ZAWA has since dispatched officers from M’soro wildlife camp to chase away the elephants.
