Problems before Tanz. Buff Hunt

This may not be the correct place to post but here goes. I have a 10 yr. old Winchester Super Express 416. I will be leaving for Tanzania on Sept. 28 for a Buff hunt. The problem is with my scopes. First I had a Leupold Vari X III 1.5X5. After 100 rounds it became blurry at any distance past 50 yds. I decided to send it back for repair (which Leupold performed in 1 day) but lost confidence in the scope so I put on a Schmidt Bender Zenith 1x4. After 80 rounds the inside lens cracked. I sent it back and they immediately gave me a new one. My gunsmith mounted it again with the same Tally QD mounts and today after practicing with 25 rounds, a large black "flake" and 3 small bubbles appeared inside the scope. All 3 scopes were mounted by an experienced/professional gunsmith. Has this ever happened to anyone? I don't know what to do next? Maybe I should use only the Iron sights.

I have been using 1.5x5 Leupolds and 1x4 or 3X Leupolds on my 375, 416s and 404s for 50 plus years with only perhaps two or three send backs, thats a pretty good record..

What kind of bench rest are you shooting from I might ask, some of the new recoil reduction bench rest will trash a scope in a hurry...

for Buffalo hunting I would just as soon use iron sights, but I was raised on iron sights and my old eyes are still mighty good...A good receiver sight with the eyepiece removed makes a great ghost peep...

If your front ring is pressing on the objective lens, at least according to Leupold, you can expect the problems experienced. I had a 1.5x5 to fail for that reason (as did 1115). I remounted it (albeit, without pressure on the lens), after Leupold's immediately fixing it, and have had no problem since. You may need a ring extention to allow mounting without pressure on that front lens.

My experience... but what do I know?

I have found the most reliable scope to be a Leupold 2.5x compact.

Forget European scopes on heavy recoiling guns.

Good point re: the rest. The first 2 incidents with the Leupold and Schmidt I was using one of those new varmint style bench rests but it had a rubber butttock holder. The last incident with the new Schmidt I was sighting in off a good ole sandbag in the front and the butt against my shoulder.

As suggested the placement of the front ring could be causing your problem regardless who installed the scope.

I had the same failer that JudgeG suggested. Donot put the front ring directly on top of the lense.

TJVCT,

Not sure if you are "out" of scopes. If you are i have an old Lyman permacenter 2.5 fixed you can borrow.

Let me know and I'll overnight it to you and you can just send it back when you return.

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

I would guess that something is amiss with the mounting. Make sure your rings are at a min .150†from the turret or the beginning of either objective. If it's a straight tube then be sure to be at least .300 from the end of the scope.

Don't over tighten. Screws should be tight but there is no need to strip out the hex head while tightening.

I also always lap the rings in to be certain there is no pinch point. This also reduces the amount of force you need to hold the scope in place. More contact area = less torque needed to apply the same clamping force.

Those are good scopes you got to break so I'm thinking that unless you're the most unlucky guy on the block it has something to do with the mounting method.

As stated above the 2.5X compact Leupold is the toughest scope I've come across. If all else fails try one of those.

Good shooting and best of luck on your hunt. Be sure to leave a few for me. clap

For recoil reduction when shooting from the bench I use a canvas bag that shot comes in filled (loose, not packed) with sand and drap it over my shoulder for padding.

Another way to do it is to use a slinding sand bag made by Mel Forbes of UltraLight Arms. Very innovative and works great. You can see it on their website.

Same as Judge for me too with my 416. I think something is amiss with your mounting.

Although cartridge selection is important there is nothing that will substitute for proper first shot placement. Good hunting, "D"
