I saw an incredible documentary on the Sundance channel titled "The Origins of Aids". The documentary mostly takes place in the Belgian Congo and claims AIDS was possibly caused by contaminated polio vaccine administered to native people. The show will again be televised on Feb. 20th at 1:30 p.m. C.S.T. and the SundanceWest channel on Feb. 20th at 4;30 p.m. I just wanted to pass this along to AR members. This is the same theory that the Kenyan woman who won the Nobel Peace Prize adheres to. That the western world was developing AIDS as a biological weapon and that it was tested on unsuspecting blacks in Africa. One of the theories goes that the World Health Organization put AIDS in the smallpox vaccine. My theory is that bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster developed the AIDS virus to destroy all mankind so that they could rule the world. As recently as April of 2004, in Nature magazine, there is an article refuting the contaminated polio vaccine theory. Regards, Terry Msasi haogopi mwiba [A hunter is not afraid of thorns]

I watched this program also, and got the feeling from the program that motive in this was to help, with the outcome unintended. Unintended consequences. Just because someone with an alphabet after his name thinks it up, doesn't mean it is the best idea. I could be wrong on that point, however. We know a lot, but not all. The contamination idea is not refuted, just challenged. We may never know. Sacred cows make the best burgers. Good Shooting!

Yes there is a theory that OPV (Oral Polio Vaccine) which was cultured from primates caused AIDS. That is, that the culture material was infected with AIDS and that the OPV was unknowingly contaminated. All this occuring before anyone knew about AIDS. There are differing views on this but all of the science seems to support the theory that the OPV wasn't contaminated. There is a ton of stuff on the internet if anyone wants to do a Google search. The Scientist CDC Here's Edward Hooper's Website. He is one of the main proponents of the OPV-AIDs theory. Regards, Terry Msasi haogopi mwiba [A hunter is not afraid of thorns]

Sundance Channel? Knowing what I know about them, I'm surprised that didn't try to claim that it was invented in George Bush's personal lab in Texas and transported to the peaceful continent of Africa in an ongoing attempt to eradicate all the world's people of color, so we can control their oil! I have that channel on permanent ignore.

I guess it is in human nature to want somebody to blame for all sorts of malaise. But it has always struck me, that poor African nations (and citizens) seem to have perfected this side of human nature. Quite apart from where the virus came from - and evolution is an ongoing battle between humans and vira - now that it is with us, how do we stop it spreading?? Only a handful of African countries seem to have paid more than lip service to this task. - mike ********************* The rifle is a noble weapon... Absolutely correct, Thabo Mbeki seems to have his own theories on AIDS and its causes. None of which are supported by science. But that's OK, he is just the president of one of the most modern countries in Africa, so his opinion shouldn't have much effect. It is easy to see how the African countries are overwhelmed by what to do, however, so are other countries. So far we seem to have perfected the technique of greatly prolonging the lives of those infected, yet the result is more infection. There are even gay groups that advocate unprotected sex, and even groups and individuals that TRY to get infected, so the wait is over for the diagnosis. The answers seem to be hard and cruel, but the alternative borders on insanity much more cruel to society as a whole. JMHO. Sacred cows make the best burgers. Good Shooting!

Poverty is a horrible thing, and certainly influences the ability of societies to react to challenges. No doubt about that. I also did not expect much AIDS research to come from poor states. That is also fair enough, there are states and organizations with the resources to produce results here. But for the life of me, I have never understood the apparent lack of focus on safe sex as a means of preventing the spread of the virus. For years, that side of things seemed awfully neglected in many of the countries that suffer the most. - mike ********************* The rifle is a noble weapon... The lack of safe sex in Africa is not for a lack of the western world trying to inform them. It has to do with the appearence of AIDS and condoms at the same time (AIDS appeared, and suddenly there were whites around telling them to use condoms). This sort of skewed cause and effect relationship is what has many africans fearing condoms (not only as ineffective against AIDS, but as perhaps even the cause).

http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn7073 Kathi, in my looking around I found the article linked above. It made me think of this thread, so I am posting it here. An interesting look at the issues. Sacred cows make the best burgers. Good Shooting!
