Sorry, but I wont fly that route again. Not stopping in capetown saves an hour and a half of sitting on the tarmac but you still have to stop at Ilse de Sol. That takes an hour and a half of sitting on the tarmac as well. I am finding I can go through europe for about the same price. It breaks the flight into two 8 hour segments or a 7 and 9 depending on what route you take. You can have a long layover or as short as an hour and a half to 2 hours. The planes are more comfortable than the airbus. The service is better as well.

Like eyedoc, I'm also looking at Sept 2005 so I would also be very interested in knowing if SAA will continue to fly out of Atlanta or not.

I spoke with someone last week, who was going to be flying out of Detroit to Spain. They had a scheduled a day to sight see then fly direct to Jo'brg. As I remember the fares were very resonable.
FYI.

This past September I flew KLM/Northwest from Detroit to Amsterdam (8hrs.)had a 90 min. layover then 9 1/2 hours to Johannisburg. Unfortunately, there was an overnight layover in Joburg before going on to Harare. Too bad you can't fly directly into Harare like in the past, flying BA out of London. Going this way, however, was so much less taxing than that ball buster flight between Atlanta and Joburg.

Kathi,

Thanks for that info. Like some others, I'm also looking at possible alternatives through Europe but it's good to have the SAA info also. I've flown the SAA route three times now and I'm not looking forward to the AirbusT.

Guys,

I know a lot of folks don't want to hear it but flying through London is not a big deal. BA's 747 and DC 10 are very comfortable and I think the BA service is excellent.

I have not detected any anti gun attitude from BA on any of the 6 flights I've flown with them. Sometimes in the States the counter people are INITIALLY confused on what to do with guns but you run into that in every airport with every airline. Actually on this last trip we had a BA guy who specifically handled our guns on both ends and our original check in and our transit through customs in the States was the smoothest ever.

As others have said breaking the flight up into two 8-9 hour segments really makes the flight more tolerable. What I find is that I'm not really jet lagged because the last leg of the trip is basically straight down London-JIA and you don't change time jones. If you can sleep on that leg you'll be ready to Rock when you arrive JIA.

Regards,

Mark
