N,

You must be getting old, reveling in these old photos. Smiler

There was a photo of Patterson in an issue of National Wildlife (bunny huggers) that I don't remember seeing before. Lion with head propped up with sticks, Patterson behind, and a tin shack behind him with a leopard skin draped on it. Ring any bells? If not, I'll send you the page. Send me your address again.

N,

The photo/printing I have is better than what I see on the screen, FWIW.

Nick

Here is another one for you. May have posted it before on AR, certainly have elsewhere. the photo comes from a photocopy so unfortunately is not as clear as ideal.

This gentleman was an Australian big game hunter in the early 1900's and was nick-named as Walter "Tiger" Smith.

In the photo are two fantastic sambar stags, two tigers, a leopard and a bear skin.

Those were the days.

I love the old fashioned bragging photos where the hunter sits or stands among his numerous trophies, skulls and skins.

My favorite part is that people often portrayed in this type of photo wear suits and ties in the field. Gone are the days of true style regardless of income. Reminds me of a story about my grandfather's older brothers in Utah around the 1930s. One particular brother used to make my grandfather drive and retrieve grouse and pheasant while he shot from a chair in the back of a moving pick-up. He wasn't being unethical even by modern standards for, as the family story goes, he did it because he didn't want to scuff his dress shoes. Big Grin Never saw a picture of ANY of those brothers when they weren't wearing three piece suits. Just relatively poor Greek immigrants but what class!
Hunting has become too casual! I think we need to return to this old world style to show proper appreciation for our sport. It might also help convince the antis that we aren't all low-class slob hunters in the process!

JMHO,

It would have been me or you saw it on NE.com. I may have posted it on AR before. I like to get good mileage out of my efforts Wink.

The photocopy is from a page in a history of winemakers of the Barossa Valley OR a history of the Yalumba wine company. I forget which.

"Tiger" Smith is sitting on wine barrels in front of the barrel store.

I'll have to track down the book again. I think I know who had it.
