The late rains in Zambia has covered the country in vast swathes of long grass. We are now entering our winter and the evenings and early morn will be crisp and frigid. This is the time to hunt Lion as game is scattered and hard to hunt. The big lone males then cover a lot of country looking for prey and readily respond to bait.

For all of us that hunt the dull gloom of morning in Africa there can never be a better time to be in the wild. The deep boom of a Lion is simply a bonus and nowadays those who hunt him are very privileged indeed.

My first Lion hunt is in the remote and most northern concession in the Luangwa valley known as Lundu or West Musalangu that abuts the North Park. A concession not hunted for a few years and here we will find big Lion and the reason I have chosen this venue. Your big Lion often seek the quiet places and avoid the conflicts of prides and coalitions. Nowadays we are obliged to only target such beasts and whilst there are some who are not interested in such pursuit for me it is the greatest hunting that I have ever experienced.

Attached is a photo of a brute taken last year and aged by an independent board at 8 years plus. He was hunted and shot on foot at close quarters and followed up in long grass. I promise you it is worth the money if you can afford it.

Looking at the photo it is not great and not sure why I look glum?

Note the head of this Lion was the size of my chest.

Thanks mate and we kept him on bait for a week to ensure he was not with a pride. He was the most magnificent animal.

Andrew, that is a superb old brute exemplar of the king of all beasts.

I have killed two lions, both after non-fatal first shots and hard core follow ups, and in one case, a final charge.

I did not smile in my photos either.

But I do remember being happy, mostly that the lions were dead and I wasn't.

Congrats.

Great lion Andrew! I hunted that area when Mike Heath of Wildcat Safaris had the consession. I was hunting buffalo, but saw lots of lion sign and heard them regularly. We were tracking buffalo early one morning when we cut tracks of lion tracking the same buffalo. We retreated, leaving the buffalo to the lion. Good luck!

I will agree to a point, not the best angle on the lion, but you can tell it is quite a lion hidden there. As was stated you look focused. I doubt that your heart rate dropped much by then from the tall grass experience! To be clear, great lion, poor light and bad pose with regard to light.
