Excess Baggage Charges for Guncases?

Does anyone know if Delta charges an excess baggage charge for gun cases. Their website is unclear. It says that they charge $150 fee each way for baggage over 62 linear inches, my case is 67" . In another place they state that they charge the fee for guncases holding more than 2 rifles.

Does anyone know what the scoop is?

Thanks.

If I read the rule correctly the limitation on baggage of any kind (including gun cases) is 62" for the first bag checked and 55 for the second bag. Two checked bags are allowed on international flights.

Worse yet, the 62" (or 55") is to be the total of length plus width plus height.

My Tuff Pak does not even come close to making that limitation however they have never rejected it in the past.

Delta did not charge me any extra for my Tuffpac last month. They have a size exemption, look under sporting goods in their baggage regulations.

Andy,

I've never been charged extra for my gun case BUT it is possible that it will happen to you. Just be prepared and don't make your trip about arguing with counter personnel about whether they are right or not.

I too, have never been charged an excess baggage fee by Delta or anyone else for that matter, relative to my TuffPak. Not to say that someone won't try it in the future. I would carry a copy of their sporting goods baggage regulations with me and refer to them if someone does try it on you.

I've never had anybody measure my gun case. All airlines will weigh it though and if it's too heavy, they tag you with added charge.

I have not been charged "extra" for the gun case and in fact have not had one weighed on last couple trips -- they were a bit over the 50lb mark but did not collect any additional $'s.
It all depends on who checks and handles your luggage -- as noted above -- just be prepared and good luck.

Last trip to New Mexico I was charged $25 extra each way for the gun case because it was my "second bag". They'll charge you extra also for anything over 50#. Leaving again tomorrow but I shipped my rifle instead for $70 round trip via UPS. Extra 20 dollars but I don't have to lug it through the airports and TSA. The airlines are after every dollar they can get their hands on.
