On the 2nd November 2005 I applied for my accreditation to conduct business in hunting with the SAPS. Yesterday it was finally approved.

When I applied initially I handed in everything that they needed according to their manual. Then they asked further information. After I handed the information in at the police station I did not get an answer for two months. I then called the Central firearms register, only to find out they have not received the information. I faxed everything to them and then they asked for more information.

I just applied for my competency certificate. I had to wait for the origanal certificate from SASLEC SETA, it took 6 months. I wonder how long I will be waiting for it.

In the meantime I cannot get my new 416 on my name.

Jaco,

If it is anything to go by you got a long wait.....

I applied for a licence for a .416 Rigby. Paid my deposit to Magnum arms in Nelspruit February last year. Competency took 10 months, got it end October last year. Applied for licence in November 05. Phoned PTA month ago and was told "documentation missing" sent back to local police station. It has taken a month to get the docs 30km to the "local" police station and they still have not received the docs. When they do get the application back and the "missing Docs" are attached it goes to the bottom of the pile. I was told to expect nothing less than 1 year once they are re-submitted.

Mad CRYBABY

All in all 3 years to get a licence ???? what a %#@!^ joke !!!!

The sad thing is that it's NOT a joke. They're dead serious about not wanting to give you (or me or anyone outside the 'circle of cronies') a licence.

I've only been waiting 6 months for my competency certificate so far, but haven't had a safe inspection yet. mgun

Fellow citizens of USA please pay attention to this. When the NRA is asking for your support remember these fellows. Now you know just how great the 2nd Ammendment is for us.

Apparently they only do a safe inspection once the firearm licence has been approved and just before it is issued. They don't do it for a competency. This so you don't buy a safe and then the application is declined and you sit with a safe and no firearm. I spoke to about 8 high-ranking SAPS to get this info.

My custom .416 has been finished since last year September, all I can do is go hold it in the shop and drool over it thumbdown

Interesting posts; in the sense that I have literally just got off the phone to a friend of mine who called to say the SAPS had phoned him to do a safe and house inspection. He had applied to do renewals of his licences given he is in the "first batch", and been at pains to ensure 110% compliance in meeting requirements.

He is a civil engineer and spends a lot of time at various contructions sites in neighbouring countries ..on telling this to the SAPS while trying to set an appointment date and time for the safe inspection he was simply told to leave safe keys with his wife...sounds fishy and like a bit of entrapment to me and I advised him to make the appointment as a priority.

I guess the message is stay awake when dealing with the machinations of the SAPS (and envy the lucky folk who can have the lobbying power of the NRA representing them)

After I begged the DFO to help me theough the process, they send out 2 officers to do my safe inspection. Two weeks later the same officers came by to have a interview with my wife. Both the officers knows me vet well.

Seems to me different stations uses different standards. I realy feel sorry for the guys without dedicated hunting status and/or a PH qualification. It feels like you are walking into a wall everytime that you deal with them.

The SAPS does not understand that rifles are my tools of trade. Due to the difficulty, it is a bit easier now, to import firearms, some clients prefer to use my rifles. If I do not have enough tools I cannot accomodate them, therefore the prevent me from earning a income. So much for my constitutional right to earn a living.

Jaco,

Best of luck. I cannot imagine what you or your fellow countrymen go through in situations like this. I went to my favorite gun dealer last week, found a 416 Remington I liked and walked out the door with it 20 minutes later! God bless America!

Die Ou Jagter,

You're not kidding! I am a card-carrying life member of the NRA and so are both of my parents. We have bought 3 guns in the last 2 weeks at our local dealer. We just have to walk in, fill out the papers, wait about 5 minutes for them to call it in, then you're out the door in under 20 minutes. I really feel bad for the guys in RSA. Good luck.

Jaco,

I know how you feel.

I did my competency certificates in April 2005.

I received my certificates in August 2005.

I handed my applications for the safe inspections as well as the copies of the certificates in also in Aug 2005.

Around the end of November 2005 the policies contacted the people I placed as references.

The police is not suppose to do a safe inspection when they do the interviews.

I received a message in Feb 2006 that my competency certificate "credit card" is ready to be collected.

With all this documentation as well as my motivations as professional hunter that the weapons. "Shotguns", "Rifles" and pistol are tools of my trade. I send in my applications for the renewal of my license.

At the same time, I also applied for a license for my 500 Jeffery. Only when I received the license will I build the rifle. No use spending a lot of money to build a rifle that I cannot shoot.

This will be at least a three year project. If I received the license before then great.

The guys in the USA. I am jealous as hell for you have the privilege to buy a rifle and enjoy shooting it almost immediately.

Wink, the barrel is being cut at the moment. I got hold of a Vector blank. I shouuld also get the blank for the stock in the next week or so. Then all the work starts. I'll post pictures as we progress.

What irritates me I will have to take the smith with me everytime I want to shoot it ( he is a good guy, but his time is wasted) and my baby won't be able to sleep at home for about a year, thats if I am lucky.
