Where is the best free range area for Buffalo and sable? I think Mokore on Coutada 9 is an option as well as some operators in the Caprivi. What areas in Zambia are currently available? Anywhere else?

Lukwati, Tanzania
Mlele, Tanzania
Kasonso Busanga, Zambia

Would be 3 contenders

Not familiar with any of the other areas mentioned, but I've spent around 60 days in Lukwati and there are a lot of buffalo, which is why I keep going back, and while I've only taken two sable there, on the two trips I didn't, I could have taken a nice sable easily. I just don't need another sable. My last trip, in 2023, I sat and watched and photographed a very nice sable bull at less than 100 yards. He seemed to know he wasn't being hunted. If I was in the market for a sable, I'd have shot him in a heartbeat.

In Zambia best to hunt Buff and Sable in two areas for instance the biggest Sable are coming out of the Kafue - Kasonso and Mufunta but sketchy for buff. Luangwa for 7 day Buff

Mlele Tanzania, without any question.

I have not seen as many old bulls and sable anywhere else else except may be Matetsi in the past.

Not many other plains animals, but lion and leopard are plenty too.

I saw plenty of buff and sable in coutda 9 last year hunting there with mokore safaris. I wounded my sable with my bow but saw plenty. I did not hunt buff but saw them and another hunter in camp took a monster of a bull.

I'll second that quote.

I did kill my biggest sable at Lukwati (Wuku) and my biggest buff on the Tarangire border (Lobo/Lokasaly) in December when the buff leave the park and start following the short rains to greener pastures. The Selous is another option but its Roosevelts sable there along with big eland and some big buff as well if you put enough time in to find them.

Agreed maybe Lunga Busanga more for the combination. Fico would get you one.

Definitely not Mufunta for buffalo but it may be the single best sable destination.

There are a number of areas where a sable/buff combo will work but the area you choose may be dependent on your expectation of trophy quality and of course budget.

Both Zambia and Tanzania have big sable and buffalo but the prices are very high. Some less expensive options might be Zimbabwe in the Forestry areas around Hwange park that can produce a big sable and a good buffalo. Makuti also in Zimbabwe can provide a big sable and a buffalo if you're willing to work for it. Mozambique has loads of buffalo and sable but the sable although mature tend to be smaller.

Maybe I am mistaken but I have not seen any Buffalo/Sable pics from Lunga and Fico is hunting both Lunga areas and on my last hunt in Kasonso I could not put my client on a decent Buffalo however a very mixed bag area and Fico is a fine PH

You are probably right, I have heard that big buffalo herd up there favors the Lunga side.

You could add Coutada 10 & 11 but neither sable or buffalo will top out nearly as big as the areas in Tanzania or Zambia (sable).

Yeah! I saw big herds of sable and the most undisturbed sable I've ever seen on Coutada 10 but I think you might struggle there to find a sable that would make 40 inches.

I have excellent hunting on Coutada 9 and 14 in Mozambique but I would not recommend it to a guy looking for that mid 40's sable. You'd get a sable there just not a monster. Coutada 9 has produced some excellent buffalo in the high 40's.

In Lukwati, you should get a +40 sable and =40 buffalo unless something goes very wrong. To get sable, you'll be on a 21 day license, so that means you get up to four buffalo, if the outfitter allows it.
And, there is plenty of other game there, and great cats. I'm going elsewhere next year, but not with some regret.
