http://allafrica.com/stories/201312040560.html Tanzania: Stray Lion Attacks Nanyumbu Villager 4 DECEMBER 2013 Nanyumbu — FEAR griped Masuguru villagers in Nanyumbu District, Mtwara Region after learning about the presence of a rogue lion that had already attacked a fellow villager, Lucy Bakari (71) while on her way to her farm. According to the son of the victim, Ajili Lichonjo, the old woman left the house early in the morning for 'shamba' work but as soon as she arrived, a lion emerged from the bush and attacked her inflicting serious injuries on her. "'Mama' cried for help and people came to her rescue. We (villagers) informed the game officers about the presence of a lion in the neighbourhood but they did not bother coming to assist us," Lichojo said. According to Lichojo, the villagers waited for the game officers who never showed up. As a result the villagers gathered carrying traditional weapons such as clubs, spears, bows and arrows, axes and others and started hunting for the lion. They spread out a hunting net which caught the lion. But the net got torn by the lion. Then it came face to face with a young man, Fadhili Dijangu, who hit it with an axe on the head killing it on the spot. The carcass was taken back to the village and was sliced to pieces and buried in the absence of game officers. The Executive Ward secretary of Masuguru, Said Litambo, said the villagers took the right decision to kill the lion otherwise more people could have lost their lives or the lion could feed on domestic animals in the area. And so it goes. I've heard that south eastern Tanzania has been heavily poached since the concessions in that area have changed hands in recent years. Makes sense. I'm sure the young man is a hot commodity at the moment as well.

Seeing it was a "stray" it was unlikely to have been a pride holder but more importantly was it over 5 years of age?
