This should be a great adventure. I second the forgiveness idea. Go for it! You'll probably need someone to join you though Anders Hunting and fishing DVDs from Mossing & Stubberud Media: www.jaktogfiskedvd.no ..and my blog at: http://andersmossing.blogspot.com

Anton: Contact Steve Kobrine. He has been trying to hunt Zebra Duiker next door in Liberia, but has not been able to put it all together yet. He may be able to tell you the logistical issues. Will J. Parks, III

So as stewards of wildlife we're now recommending that someone illegally take a game animal? I realize that you're probably joking, but remember this is a public forum. Let's not give the antis any more ammo.

Anton: I've visited there several times. Cote d'Ivoire is a stunningly beautiful country, rich in flora and fauna, and with a colorful - if recently violent - history. Due to the violence occurring earlier this year, many outfitters have gone out of business due to the drop-off in tourism. Unfortunately, what had been a wonderful coastal vacation destination has become the location for a series of violent uprisings, several coups, and now two civil wars - the most recent in the past two years. Hundreds of Ivorians were killed, including severe violence in the largest city of Abidjan, where you would likely fly in. To quote the US State Department: "Although Abidjan is considerably calmer since the arrest of former President Gbagbo, law and order have yet to return to all of Abidjan’s neighborhoods and some parts of the countryside. Police and military are limited in their capacity to respond to requests for assistance and are not yet able to reestablish authority at pre-crisis levels." Having been a French colony, there is still a conspicuous ex-pat community, ensuring fresh baguettes in the morning and several first-rate bistros, and the unique maquis where you dine al fresco, serving Ivorian versions of cassoulet, coq au vin, and couscous. There are some European tourists returning in small numbers, however, looking to explore the lush forests abutting vibrant cities that boast some of Africa's most fascinating street markets. During my visits there, a favorite activity is shopping for 'colons', wooden sculptures that range in size from 12-inches to life size. They get their name from their usual depiction of characters from the French colonial period whose spirits are channeled through the figurines - or so I'm told. I ended up with dozens of them - doctors, soldiers, hunters, preachers - with two of them almost six-feet tall. Here's one we call 'Clement' who helps to guard our pool area: When things are calm, the people are open, gracious to strangers, and always interesting. The population is almost evenly split between Catholic, Sunni Muslim, and Animist religions and there is a history of religious tolerance. Malaria is a serious health issue, and all of my Ivorian friends are afflicted. If you find yourself driving there, follow the norm and never stop completely at either a stop sign or traffic signal as carjackings are not uncommon. Try to always drive at a pace slightly faster than a person can walk or run. Like travel in so many other developing countries, you have to offset the risks with the rewards and always err on the side of prudence. If you do go, be sure to post your experiences and good luck! Neat sculpture. Minus the beer gut and that looks a little like Saeed. If you go back you should look for a Walter to go with him.

I spent 105 days off the coast of Liberia in 2004 onboard the USS Nashville LPD-13. We went ashore several times in Monrovia. I tried my best to get a trip set up for the various forest duikers (including the zebra), Royal Antelope, Bates Pygmy Antelope and Pygmy Hippo. Never was able to put it together. Wish I had because such opportunities do not come around often.

A Canadian friend of mine who loves "do it yourself" stuff has hunted Ivory Coast. It was possible, not sure right now...difficult to get licenses, etc. Zebra duiker are present, along with a full complement of other forest duikers and some buffalo/bongo/giant forest hog/red river hog/etc. Tough hunting. I was in Liberia in March, good hunt but we didn't find zebra duiker. Really glad Steve Kobrine finally broke the ice with a zebra duiker. THEY ARE THERE--I saw several skins. The challenge is that the local guides are purely meat hunters. To them a zebra duiker, which is fairly uncommon, has the same "meat value" as a bay duiker, which is very plentiful. So, while the forest hunters have all taken zebra duikers over the years, they have never done "species specific" hunting like we want to do. I don't think a point will be reached where zebra duiker is a sure thing, or even 50%, but they will figure it out and it's going to get better. I hunted on the west side of Liberia, near the Sierra Leone and Guinea borders. There is lots of game there, and Steve Kobrine has found lots of game on the east side, near Ivory Coast. It isn't easy, but it's a good news story and I'll try it again!

I represent Morris Dougba and Liberia Safaris. This year was a trial run but things should be a bit better sorted by next season. As Craig said, they are there....it's just a matter of being in the right place. Good things coming on buffalo and bongo as well. Tom Addleman tom@dirtnapgear.com

Yes, I watched it too. Although Jim did not take a Zebra duiker, he had one offered to him by a poacher(dead of course). Beautiful trophy!

I'm there right now and it's a beautiful country. Been offered to hunt"deer" and monkeys but have said no so far, Côte d'Ivoire don't have legal hunting and so it's a'local' thing with shotguns and spears.

The episode was pretty interesting. The black duiker Jim got is a cool looking little animal. Let us know if you decide to go "deer" hunting Anton! Peter Andersen Peak Wildlife Adventures 1-306-485-8429 peakwildlifeadventures@hotmail.com www.peakwildlifeadventures.com

Nice trophy. Renee, the hunter who took it, used to have on the most spectacular trophy rooms I have ever seen. I could have sworn reading it was donated or something like that, so not sure it still exists. ____________________________ If you died tomorrow, what would you have done today ... 2018 Zimbabwe - Tuskless w/ Nengasha Safaris 2011 Mozambique - Buffalo w/ Mashambanzou Safaris
