According to SCI:

"June 3, 2004

Traveling with Firearms through the US: ATF has suspended firearms transits through the United States. Non US Citizen hunters traveling with firearms through the US are encouraged to ship their firearms as bonded freight with a freight forwarder such as American Airlines (www.aacargo.com) or Delta (www.deltacargo.com). Non US Citizen hunters traveling to the US for a hunting trip and wish to bring a personal firearm must do so through an authorized representative. The authorized representative must be a US citizen and willing to apply for a temporary import permit (form DSP-61) from the US State Department. "

Yeah, I heard that terrorists were sneaking into the country under the guise of hunting grizzly bears...

And everyone complained when Canada asked for a completed firearms description and $50 three years ago, .......many called for a boycott of all Canadian hunting!
These U.S. rules have led to me being on a sabbatical for most international hunting and all U.S. hunting for three years, ........can't fly through New York or Atlanta or be on a plane refueling in Hawaii. It's like a new submersive anti-hunting group has found a way!!!!

You can still hunt with your own guns in the U.S., as long as you obtain the necessary permit. The process may be a bit more onerous for you than it is for an American entering Canada with firearms, but that's the way things are post-9/11.

Contact the carriers that fly into and out of Canada and ask them to expand their routes (so you don't have to fly through the U.S. to get to your hunting destinations).

It is information transmitted by Safari Club International.

FWIW, government web sites don't always contain the latest information.

IMHO, the security measures have gone a little too far.

It now takes about 2 months to process papers from the State Dept. to just go pheasant hunting in Nebraska or attend a shooting range (not to mention needing a U.S. hunting license to do so) in Nevada- all with the possibility of the application being refused for one technicality or another...

To top it off, it is costing us Canadians more to fly to Africa- we need to arive in a European city then fly down south. I do not believe SAA is permitted by law to fly out of Montreal, Toronto or any other eastern airport to Joburg.
